Witchy Goings-On Set For Walpurgis Night

Author: Expatica (Netherlands) Source: Expatica (Netherlands)

Title: WITCHY GOINGS-ON SET FOR WALPURGIS NIGHT
The Witches' Trail leads through dozens of ancient German towns and wild, romantic areas full of craggy peaks, steeped in a tradition of myth and mystery.
It is renowned for the Walpurgis Night celebrations on 30 April which the Germanic peoples once celebrated as the beginning of spring. Today only puppet witches loom from the souvenir shops.
But every year on the night before 1 May, an estimated 100,000 self-styled witches and warlocks, along with New Age adepts and tourists take part in May Eve revelries on the summit of the highest peak in the Harz Mountains.

"...an estimated 100, 000 self-styled witches and warlocks..."
I have a great fairly value-neutral way of finding out if something is offensive. I simply substitute the word in question with another. For example, let's change some wording here...
"an estimated 100, 000 self-styled Christians "
Jesus told his followers to take all they had and give to the poor, to turn the other cheek, and to love one another. I haven't noticed many Christians actually doing that. I suppose it does work, after all. But I'm sure most Christians would find THAT offensive, eh?

"an estimated 100, 000 self-styled witches and warlocks, "
Self-styled Witches and Warlock? Just bothers me.
We don't get any respect. Still we are getting noticed.

In German "bald" means soon. I've wanted to celebrate Walpurgisnacht at the Hexentanzenplatz for many a year. My friends in Lower Saxony are not too far away from it. Yet another reason to visit them in the spring at their bed & breakfast farm, where I can always stay for free :)

Bald simply means 'white-topped' (as in a mountain covered in snow) or a top void of covering (as a mountain top void of heavy trees or brush) .

"Bald" has other meanings in German, than the name of a mountain. I think it's something to do with Closeness. While the musical suite, A Night on Bald Mountain, was based on a painting, Night on Bald Mountain, depicting posited Walpurgisnacht revelries, the actual Bald Berg the Witches would dance on would be similar to David Christ's "Masada, " the Imminent High Place. Basically, the Spiritual Highground is convenient to all, and a great place for a gather.
I'll scry you there.

I won't even touch the "warlock" comment... but "Night on Bald Mountain" was done by Modeste Musorgsky, not Alexander Borodin.
