Cat's Amazing Feet

Author: Karen Kotze, East And Bays Courier Source: Stuff (NZ)

Title: CAT'S AMAZING FEET
Extra the kitten has been aptly named by her owners - she has 26 toes that give her a distinct advantage over her naturally climbing moggie mates.
"You would sort of want to wear boxing gloves when you play with her," says Kaelene Gerrard, who lives with her partner Eli Eliu and daughters Mercy, six, and 12-year-old Shardae.
She examined the frisky feline's paws and did a double take at what she found.
"We counted and then recounted but we had it right the first time," she says.
Extra has seven toes on each front paw and six toes on each back paw - instead of the normal five on each.

If ya wanna see "thumbs" on a cat, you should see my little guy, Maya! He's got thumbs for sure.... we got him as a rescue baby when he was, I would say, not much older than 4 weeks old, he was so tiny. We saw his little "extra" toes then and decided right away to adopt him. We aren't sure of hhis ancestory, but his markings lead us to believe that he is a Seal-Lynx point Siamese. Does anybody know of Polydactylism runs in that particular breed of cat?
Love to all

Polydactyl feet are common in older lines of Maine Coon cats. I know someone who intentionally breeds them, to retain the "classic" Maine Coon gene line. But thumbs? That explains why my Smokey and Mikey can open doors whenever they feel like it. I knew it -- when humans become extinct, cats will take over the world. I'm hiding the car keys from now on.

My mother's cat has this and he is the cutest thing. Surprisingly though, he is the most ungraceful cat I've ever seen. Although he can pick up popcorn himself from a bowl...

"In times past, cats with polydactyly were favoured ship cats and were considered to be the preferred familiars of witches."
I'd buy that for a dollar!
I'm not a cat person myself, but a cat with that many toes and a cool personality to boot...man that would win over even a hard core Doggy person like myself!!
Don't get me wrong...I love cats...just as long as they are somebody elses and I dont have to clean the litter!
(had a bad experience with jelous cats...swore them off for life after that cause it broke my heart to get rid of them.)

My kitty has thumbs! Yes, thumbs! She was a stray my neighbor was feeding and my neighbor said she had extra toes. But when I picked up the kitten and examined her toes, it wasn't toes but thumbs! She has four toes on each paw placed like our fingers are placed, and then she has a very large "thumb" placed lower, to the side, just like our thumbs are placed. She can climb up palm trees much more efficiently than all the other cats.

The most famous six-toe'ed kitties are the descendents of those once owned by author Ernst Hemingway. I think there are still something like 26 six-toe'ed cats living at the Hemingway house/museum in FL.

Maybe I should count the toes on my hubby's cat again. That booger opens locked cabinets, turns doorknobs, pulls the lid (which I struggle to open) right off the food bucket for himself and the others if I'm slow of a morning.
Sounds like Extra's toes are quite safe. Life and health, Kitty.

My first feline friend had 1 extra toe on each rear foot and 2 extras on his back. 26 total phlanges might be the record, though. I hope this wee one has a long and healthy life-- with all of those toes left right where they are.
