The Psychics Of Matamata Rile Church

Author: Kate Monahan, Waikato Times Source: Stuff.com (NZ)

Title: THE PSYCHICS OF MATAMATA RILE CHURCH
Outside a storm is brewing, while in a brightly painted Matamata store on Tuesday afternoon a group of women is gathered.
Crystals and prisms of glass hang above the counter, incense wafts through the air, and candles, owl and goblin figures and colourful crystals line the shelves.
The store, Inspirations, formerly called Moon Magic Creations, is run by Maggie Roberts, and is a meeting point and hub for psychics, healers and mediums in the community.
"Society is getting more curious about what else is out there, what are the alternatives. We are all looking for a higher power, whether you call it God, Allah, Buddha or whatever. It's love."
Another visitor to the shop is Shirley McPherson, founder of the New Spiritual Fellowship, which organises fortnightly evenings with mediums who claim to channel messages from the dead.
It's the kind of thing that is getting the Christian community in Matamata riled up.

| Seeking Answers To Questions? | Jul 16th. at 10:45:41 am EDT

This woman from the Christian bookstore mentioned people getting depressed when they seek answers they "don't find." Hmm, there are many sources of depression and not all of them have to do with not finding answers. Furthurmore, the implication I take from her comment is that she thinks her faith has all the answers. I disagree. Questions are one of the things we live our life for. I believe we are born to discover the questions and then our task is to find the answers ourselves. We don't need to sit in a pew each Sunday and be told the question of the day and thenbe given the answer as a minister sees it. We have our own questions and must find our own answers.
Additionally, this quote from the article, "I think it's deceptive really, that's my personal opinion. They start with the impression they are trying to help. I think the Ministers' Association was right to warn people, especially with our youth, they are easily influenced, but people are entitled to their own views."
So, this won't likely happen but, what if, just what if, a Pagan Association (man, in this context that conjures some interesting images) said the same thing about Christians? The ones in my town, the mega-churches, say things like this but the dollars that flow through their tax free "gift shop", the mega-visitor center, the politicians they support, their "flock" who develop some serious tunnel vision when they sign up...I could go on. I always thought that ones faith meant showing respect for others, practicing charity, etc. What I see now seems pretty darn deceptive. There are certain people (those not members) who are off limits. These guys don't even have the civility to smile, nod, say hi, whatever if one does not belong to their church and support their hierarchy in the manner to which they have definitely become accustomed. I can only shake my head.
I did notice that the article was pretty balanced though. It wasn't too one-sided. That was good. Peace all.

I know this is not normally acceptable but I must reply to NightLad's suggestion. If you carefully read the text he has suggested you will find that Saul was out of favor with his god for disobedience. Xians would see this as a disobedient fallen man being even more sinful. Bad example to try and use to convince the fundies.

>>>"The Catholic Church in Matamata has its own youth ministry, which speaks to parishes and schools around the area. "
Those better be Private Christian schools. If they are PUBLIC, then I say it is time the Wiccans in the area get together and demand equal access. ;-)
But on a serious note, I was really offended at the general tone of "ohhhh, you see, those people make you pay money for their hocus-pocus". Hey, ever hear of "tithes"? In an alternative spirituality store people /choose/ to enter, they /choose/ to pay for a palm-reading, or a tarot session, or a massage – it is all very well presented. (And I think most practitioners would emphasize that the fee is in relation to their time, not the practice, which is only fair.) Compared to the Church Corporation that first makes adherents believe they not only need, but can’t live without under the penalty of eternal suffering, their services – /then/ they ask for money.
Which is really more insidious?
I also find it amusing how the Christians in this report empacized the fact that the Church has always warned against “dabbling with unknown forces.” Clearly these people don’t really read their Bibles. Check out Saul and the Witch of Endor: [Web LINK]
Feel free to quote it the next time some high-and-mighty type (like in this article) decides to lecture you about thow “real Christians don’t deal with that stuff.”
