Fake Quake Causes Some To Leave Town

Author: John Jones Source: Gisborne Herald (NZ)

Title: FAKE QUAKE CAUSES SOME TO LEAVE TOWN
A prediction of an earthquake and tsunami caused consternation bordering on panic in Gisborne yesterday.
People are reported to have left town while others moved to high ground, and the occupants of one building evacuated.
The prediction and associated rumours that have swept Gisborne over the past few days have annoyed emergency services.
Police and civil defence staff fielded calls yesterday from people who were alarmed by reports that an American psychic was predicting another big earthquake, accompanied by a tidal wave.
Reports have varied, but the psychic claims to have predicted the earthquake on December 20.

You notice there is no actual "psychic" involved in this morass of rumor here. It seems to have been born out of people's fear of an actual, recent event that could be repeated. I, too, would rather have evacuated based on a rumor that was totally false than stayed to die because I would not go when the "rumor" was true. Starting the rumor was cruel.

I'd rather feel like a fool for leaving town over a fake Quake and Tsunami, than drowning to death in a real one. The psychic was wrong of course, but considering recent events in 2004 I can hardly blame people for the panic. They need a better alarm system.
