Natural Health Products Confiscated

Author: Hayden Donnell, North Shore Times Source: Stuff (NZ)

Title: NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS CONFISCATED
Thousands of dollars worth of stock have been confiscated in checkups on North Shore natural health practices.
Medsafe, which regulates therapeutic products, has had compliance officers check natural health products and claims on the Shore.
Any medicines or products categorised as not complying with the 1981 Medicines Act have been confiscated.
A ban on advertising alternative medicines and claiming they have therapeutic benefits beyond what Medsafe deems accurate has been enforced.
A Medsafe spokesman says the organisation is simply cracking down on inaccurate and dangerous claims by natural health websites and ads.

While I admit that some vitamins and other alternatives may be dangerous, and people knew about them, if there has been no other problem with them for years, then this so-called crack-down may be more than "dangers" involved. The Drug Companies have been seeking a monopoly for years on drugs and vitamins sold over the counters and in health food markets, now more than in the past because people are seeking and finding- alternatives to medicines and drugs that have proven to be far more dangerous-or at least a hindrance than any help. This is a modern day equivalent to the crack downs that came upon midwives and rural cunning folk because the doctors wanted the money they could wring from the childbirthing and medical business, a business that still benefits only a few, rather than the great majority that still needs these things, but have little insurance or money to pay. Alternatives are competition- and that's why the uproar and the excuses. unless we can protect our rights to choose what we want-we will soon lose our rights to what we need. Granted there are charlatans and snake oil men in every business- but oddly, if the nostrum works-it is an alternative to what doesn't for those who may benefit by it.

I've got news for many of you. The FDA doesn't test that many drugs anymore. Big Pharma does! This is the result of budget cuts plus Big Pharma's huge influence in the bordello known as Congress. (I don't intend to offend any prostitutes who may be reading this.)
Blockbusting drugs are to be marketed, Wall Street satisfied and bonuses paid. Dead patients? Their families now can't sue as effectively as before. Thank you "tort reform."
I think Mother Jones magazine did an article on drug testing within the past year.

"Then, after months of pushing the new drug, gee, the patients find out about the side effects are worse than the original ailment."
Have you seen the ad for one of the restless-leg-syndrome drugs -- the one that says to stop taking immediately if you suddenly find yourself with intense urges to gamble, have sex, drink alcohol, or do any other compulsive behavior? That one really kills me.
"Eliminates freckles. Could cause abdominal bloating, diarrhea, anorexia, heart palpitations, or brain tumors. Stop taking immediately if you have sudden headaches or experience chest pain."
Yet the gov't freaks if people take more than 500mg of Vitamin C.

The government shouldn't be involved in this at all. It's a matter for the insurance industry. For example, many of our manufactured products are tested and approved by Underwriters Labortories. As their title suggests, it is an organization established to protect the insurance companies against lawsuits filed by persons harmed by faulty products. The same kind of situation can and should exist for the drug companies as well as those companies offering alternative healthcare options. The result would be more and less expensive medications and healthcare products as well as a freeer society.

Since this is from New Zealand, I can't comment on the state of affairs regarding natural medicine laws there. However, in the States, we have the FDA approving drugs whose manufacturers claim all sorts of things while neglecting to mention the adverse side effects.
Pharmaceuticals are put on shelves and bribe doctors to push the drugs while ads on TV boast of how such-and-such a drug can do so many wonders. Then, after months of pushing the new drug, gee, the patients find out about the side effects are worse than the original ailment.
And these are the stuff the FDA allows into public access.
Meanwhile those who prefer homeopathy or other alternative medicines or treatments have to study up enough on the herbal doseage, side effects and make sure the packaged capsules do indeed contain what the manufacturer's claim. And most of these alternative medicines have to say some caveat about claims to avoid the FDA pouncing on them.
IOW a bit of hypocrisy is afoot.
If i wish to drink tea made from a Japanese water fungus, and the product is not toxic, I should be free to do so. If I prefer to use products not tested on animals, that is my choice. But for something like the FDA in " concern for public welfare" to target homeopaths, herbalists and alternative healing is very hypocritical of them. After all they don't get on the tobacco companies, nor do they fine any pharmaceutical company who make unsubstantiated claims about their product.
Too bad we can't recall politiicans for being " not as avertised".
