Curses, The Students Are Doing Voodoo

Author: Ben Fawkes, The Dominion Post Source: Stuff (NZ)

Title: CURSES, THE STUDENTS ARE DOING VOODOO
Students rarely receive an A for sending a curse to their lecturers, but that is what Massey students are being encouraged to do.
The university's new magic and witchcraft paper allows students to make voodoo dolls or "magical curse tablets" for their first assignment.
The School of History, Philosophy and Classics is offering the extramural paper, which examines attitudes toward magic.
It has 120 students in its first semester. Listed as a religious studies paper, it can also be credited in history and classics degrees.

Would they have gotten a lesser grade if it was any other kind of spell? I know there are quite a few things one can do with a poppet besides throw curses- and in Voudun, it was no exception.

What if someone really ends up hurt as a result of this classroom curse?

I have a few friends down in New Zealand, yet I had to hear about this on Wren's Nest.
Oh well, as a former student of anthropology and the classic humanities, I can think of a few courses I took where such exercises would've been extremely fun.
Fight with knowledge, not in ignorance.

I've been saying it for years: let's go to New Zealand!
Yeah!
There are still sane people in this world.

Sounds kind of fun, even though the reporter sounds like he doesn't agree. After all, witchcraft and voudun do have a place in history. But I'll bet the student who gets the "A" is the one who can make his poppet work like it's supposed to.
