Women Barred From Saudi Election

Author: Donna Abu-Nasr, Associated Press   Source: Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (IN)

Title: WOMEN BARRED FROM SAUDI ELECTION

Women may neither vote nor run in Saudi Arabia’s first nationwide elections, the government announced Monday, dashing hopes of progressive Saudis and easing fears among conservatives that the kingdom is moving too fast on reforms.

Some women considered the move yet another indignity in a country where they need their husbands’ permission to study, travel or work. But others said they wouldn’t trust themselves to judge whether a candidate is more than just a handsome face.

The religious establishment had been lobbying against women’s participation in the elections, diplomats said.

And These Are Bush's Best Buddies Oct 13th. at 10:47:04 am EDT

Sheesh!

This is the "democracy" Shrub is fighting for in the Middle East. Gotta protect those Saudis from big bad ol' Saddam!

The American people have paid Dubya $1.6 million to be our president. The Saudi royal family and the Bin Ladens have given Dubya and family $1.4 Billion in investments in the Bush family business. Now, who is Dubya going to be best budies with? Not US!

If this is Shrub's idea of democracy, then we should vote against him. He's obviously a theocrat who doesn't know what democracy is all about (case in point, John A$$croft is our attorney general appointed by Shrub) .

Between their medieval-era public executions, universal distrust and abuse of women, and as a fount of terrorism, I declare Saudi Arabia to be ENEMY NUMBER ONE, if we are truly advocates of freedom, democracy, and the crushers of terrorist regimes. But alas, the House of Saud and the Bush clan are thick as thieves. Justice is a state of mind, apparently.

So They Don't Get It Right The First Time Oct 12th. at 10:55:53 pm EDT

Took most places that have a history of elections, quite a while to let a significant portion of their people vote. At least they are having elections of some sort now.

Baby steps, but at least they are moving. As for a culture as removed from mine in time as that one seems to be, well i just feel glad to be here in the 21st century.

Pity, they are still in perhaps the thirteenth.

The Solution! Oct 12th. at 8:29:57 pm EDT

by Operanut (Austin, Texas) - wc_xemail

Snapdragon proposes the Lysistrata solution for our social insanities. Certainly a good idea blessed by antiquity. Yes, but ORGANISE first! There are a couple of Islamic feminist sites where you can get it together and then set a date for cutoff! It might be your head in those patristic societies so keep a sharp knife handy.

Huh Oct 12th. at 7:30:38 pm EDT

by Jenna (Northern Virginia) - wc_xemail

Okay. We're a Muslim country. No good Muslim woman would remove her veil in order to be photographed, so let's make that a requirement to register to vote.

Literacy tests, anyone?

Who Decides?? Oct 12th. at 5:28:40 pm EDT

by Klarynn (AZ) - wc_xemail

Who can decide that a voice is worth more because it comes from the mouth of a man? I find this truly discouraging and regardless of cultural differences, women should be allowed to use their voices.

For what can one vote in a kingdom anyway?

Won't Or Can't - Same Difference. Oct 12th. at 3:55:28 pm EDT

by Rowan Snapdragon (Memphis, TN) - wc_xemail

There is no difference between won't or can't, but there is a difference between having sex and not having sex! There is also a difference between oppression and laziness. Lets see, the only one's that can and have are Indira Ghandi of India, Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, or Margaret Thatcher of England, Several lovely ladies of ancient Egypt, Two in Zambia, not many others, it is a very short list.
Oh, and let's not forget all those Catherines. Hmm, it is still a short list.

Sure we have representatives, mayors, and Governors, but it really ends there, doesn't it. So is there a difference? no, there is not. Men here won't allow it, either. A woman probably would not want to wage war. A woman probably would tell the Saudis where to stick it... A woman might actually tell the truth and do what is fair and just - she might actually want to protect the people of her country. And most women would pay the bills, not finance their children's future.

It is easy to put a woman in control. If they follow these two easy steps:

1. withhold sex.
2. Get Organized!

There are more women in this country than men. There are more women in this world than men. The numbers alone favor the female.

Blessed Be
Rowan.

How Dare This Be The Case? Oct 12th. at 12:39:06 pm EDT

by Annie (Sardegna) - wc_xemail

"But others said they wouldn’t trust themselves to judge whether a candidate is more than just a handsome face."

My father and brother, and my husband all agreed that I was too stupid to make such decisions. I am good at f**king though.

Bye bye Saudis, you're all gone in this new millenium.

Not Surprising Oct 12th. at 12:26:36 pm EDT

by Brigid (Manassas, VA) - wc_xemail

Even when women are finally allowed to vote, assuming it ever happens in that kingdom, it will take a long time for them to be free in their voting.

A small island country off the coast of Saudi, Bahrain allows women to vote. It's a Muslim country, though unrestrictive enough that the Saudis regularly cross the causeway to party on the weekends. Bahrain has made huge strides with women's rights, but they have a long way to go. And even though women are allowed to vote, many vote as their husbands demand, against their own preferences, because they believe they must do everything their husbands dictate.

Don't doubt for a second that the same won't happen in Saudi if/when the fundies there relax their grip on women's lives.

Hmmmm.... Oct 12th. at 11:26:15 am EDT

"But others said they wouldn’t trust themselves to judge whether a candidate is more than just a handsome face."

I'm guessing these are not the same ones who say they find the veils freeing because while covered men are not looking at them as sexual beings, but just as co-workers.
Or maybe not?

This Is Not.... Oct 12th. at 11:00:26 am EDT

by AmethystRose (Milford, PA) - wc_xemail

true Islam, these muslim countries have distorted what the Qu'ran says about women's equality. It it is says they are allowed to vote, own property, ect. And it also says to dress modestly, that doesnt mean being covered head to toe. The only time that you are supposed to cover your hair is during prayer. I was raised as a muslim and went to a mosque that practiced what the Qu'ran said. No men controlled the women. It is sad what these countries have done to the true teachings of Islam.

Saudi's Refuse The Truth... Oct 12th. at 10:36:01 am EDT

by Guido Paganos (Pennsylvania, USA) - wc_xemail

that women are equal to men. I formally condemn the country and its policies and those who would stand in the way of freedom for all their women. I suppose that will earn me a Salmon Rushdie like sentiment from them, but I really don't care.

The fact is, folks, Saudi's included here, that if you can't accept women as being equals in everything and as a very valuable part of your society then you clearly have no sympathy or support from me.

I wonder though, what Terrorist fighting, "no-permission slip asking" George W. Bush will do about this. Probably nothing since ole Bandar Bush is his lifetime buddy and the Taliban visited him as Governor of Texas. Oh and don't forget Arbusto drilling and the Bin Laden family investing in his little operation with the help of James R. Bath and that whole lovely connection.

By the way, I want to make an official citation that the preceding information was obtained from the Michael Moore film Fahrenheit 9/11â„¢ and is not my own personal information.

Now then, this little turn of events of course does NOT surprise me in this country that even wants our own female soldiers to go covered up when they are off the base and about in the Saudi country-side. So, yet again we see the ugly face of intolerance and disparaging conduct on the part of people that allegedly "love us" or are "friendly to us". I don't want them as friends quite frankly, oil or no oil.

What's The Difference Between Can't And Won't? Oct 12th. at 9:34:57 am EDT

by karrie9 (Kenosha, WI) - wc_xemail

True many women do vote in America, though many won't (true for many men too) ... So what is the difference between a country that just *won't* elect a woman as President/leader, such as the United States of America, and one in which they *can’t*, such as Saudi Arabia?

What is the *functional* difference?

The conservatives in our country are also rather reassured that reforms and equity are not moving to fast here *either* … As time marches on but we don’t, as some barriers meant to be broken haven’t been, it’s no wonder religious conservatives are trying to push things their way. It’s one of the many reasons behind that phenomenon.
