Developers And Purists Erase Mecca's History

Author: Laith Abou-Ragheb   Source: Reuters AlertNet (UK)

Title: DEVELOPERS AND PURISTS ERASE MECCA'S HISTORY

Some of Islam's historic sites in Mecca, possibly including a home of the Prophet Mohammad, are under threat from Saudi real estate developers and Wahhabi Muslims who view them as promoting idolatry.

Sami Angawi, an expert on the region's Islamic architecture, said 1,400-year-old buildings from the early Islamic period risk being demolished to make way for high rise towers for Muslims flocking to perform the annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest city.

Angawi estimated that over the past 50 years at least 300 historical buildings had been levelled in Mecca and Medina, another Muslim holy city containing the prophet's tomb.

Wahhabism, Saudi Arabia's dominant doctrine which promotes a strict narrow interpretation of Islam, was largely to blame, he said.

"They (Wahhabis) have not allowed preservation of old buildings, especially those related to the prophet. They fear other Muslims will come to see these buildings as blessed and this could lead to polytheism and idolatry."

this is definitely not new, and has been practised worldwide for many reasons, but the chiefest are, to rewrite a history or religion to make it fit the current accepted thought, to control it, or to establish a "new" history or religion for the masses to be forced to accept in order to justify the actions of those that destroy it. some examples:
the first emperor of china who ordered the burning of books to eradicate the history and knowledge that went before- and buried alive some five hundred scholars who protested.

the burning and destruction of the library of alexandria by cyril who also ordered the murder of hypatia because she was a premier teacher in her day- and an enemy because she was both pagan- and a woman.

the destruction of the books and codexes in ancient mexico and south america by the spanish who was in the process of enslaving those empires. during the inquisition, in europe, it was also considered against church law for any layman to be able to read and interpret the bible.

the bible has many accounts of pagan idols being smashed and temples desecrated because they worshipped something other than their god.

the fundie muslims also despise what they call idolatry, and view anything that can inspire worship outside of what is sanctioned by the koran-- as suspect and will cheerfully destroy anything such as monuments and stone edifaces in which people might take too much of a pious interest. a concept that seems popular in the middle east by just about everyone.
but the ones doing the bombing at the moment have little respect for anything. after all-- they believe that the ends do justify the means-- even when it means killing the innocent in unexpected and cruel ways. and even children can become a justifiable target because they are also the enemy and therefore deserve death.

Seems to me the spiritual interests of al qaeda would be better served by preserving the historic integrity of sites like this one than by proving THEY HAVE NO INTEGRITY AT ALL by blowing up trains & trade centers.
