Saudi Arabia: Channels Under Fire For Promoting Black Magic

Author: Ibrahim Al-Thagafi Source: Asharq Alawsat (UK)

Title: SAUDI ARABIA: CHANNELS UNDER FIRE FOR PROMOTING BLACK MAGIC
Riyadh, Asharq Al-Awsat- Arabsat, a leading satellite service provider in the Arab world, has threatened to suspend a number of satellite channels that it broadcasts stating that these channels promote magic and charlatanism and claim to have knowledge of the unknown.
Khaled bin Ahmed Belkhyour, the CEO of Arabsat who is also an engineer, told Asharq Al Awsat that the satellite operator will take practical steps during the next two weeks to stop such channels being transmitted if they continue to broadcast programs related to charlatanism. He highlighted that the organization had addressed officials responsible for managing these satellite channels four months ago to end what Belkhyour described as “myths, falsehood and charlatanism”. He stressed that Arabsat has taken legal action to suspend these channels as a result of public opinion, pointing out that the objectives of Arabsat are to uphold the pillars of religion, heritage and traditions.
The global forum warned against these channels due to the damage caused to religious beliefs as they drive viewers towards polytheism and to rely on people rather than God to solve their problems.

"Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it." - Andre Gide "Everything absolute belongs to pathology." Friedrich W. Nietzsche
Anytime anybody thinks they've got it all wrapped up in a neat little bow, and they're supposed to convince others - run, don't walk, as far and as fast as possible.
I've been to Saudi, and I don't like their culture. I think it's repressive, totalitarian, and morally reprehensible. But it's not my place to tell them they're doing it wrong. I've met some fundies in this country I feel exactly the same way about. Our president comes to mind.
As long as they leave us alone, I'm ok. The moment they try to impose their beliefs on me and mine we have a problem.
I keep waiting to see if anyone will try to get money from the "office of faith-based initiatives" for a pagan organization - I figure that's the next lawsuit.

I could have sworn that people had the option to change the bloody channel. Don't like it? Don't watch it. Market forces will handle the rest.
I love Fundamental Muslims...try so hard to avoid being exposed to temptation, that when they do become exposed to it, they either fold like a paper airplane or blow themselves up.
Makes me feel bad for the people who honestly, truly believe in Allah and take Islam to heart.

There are a few tribes in some of those countries who still worship in their old pre-Islamic ways. Look it up. It's quite interesting.

Don't worry people, most Middle Eastern countries have WitchVox blocked on their firewalls (at least, they did in the United Arab Emirates seven years ago) . They can't read what we post here, so feel free to mention how big of a bunch of idiotic fundies they really are.
And I'd agree. If they're going to complain about a TV show, I'd hate to see how many book burnings a year The Religion of Perpetual Outrage does.

It's censorship. That's pretty simple. Now, in our country, we have laws to protect us from such government censorship. Do such laws exist there? We can morally oppose such actions but, legally, it's their country and their rules. Not much can be changed there.
I just hate that this will be used as more cannon-fodder by those that blatantly discriminate against Islam. People in this country, and our own religious community, just take whatever they can to decry the evils of the Islamic religion. They'll just use this as another example and ignore that such things happen under every single other religion around the world.
Let's just TRY not to use this as more Muslim-bashing nonsense.

Yes this is censorship and doesn't really give much credit to the people who actually watch these channels but you have to remember that Saudi Arabia is an Islamic State in the fundamentalist sense.
While in the West we beleive that censorship is wrong (despite the U.S. having a banned books list) you have to remember that Saudi Arabia is a different country with a different culture. They aren't even allowed to put voice over on ads because it would offend people or make them believe that God is speaking to them. We have to be careful when judging people from different cultures.
It is true that Islam forbids people from doing fortune telling and witchcraft, I went to a school where most of the kids were Muslim and were not allowed to engage with the 'occult.' (That didn't stop them from asking me about Tarot Cards, palmistry, astrology and Paganism though but I think that was out of mere curiousity.)
Personally I don't really think these censors are giving TV audiences any credit. If they are devout Muslims then they will either ring up and complain or simply change the channel. People were given brains, let them use them.

They are only trying to protect their folks from the evils of an education about dissenting views. After all, it wouldn't do for sheep to have questions they can't--and won't answer! Where would their power be?
