Witchcraft Murders In Makete

Author: Asiraji Mvungi, The Guardian Source: IPP Media (Africa)

Title: OUTRAGEOUS WITCHCRAFT MURDERS IN MAKETE
Seven people have been brutally murdered and seven others severely wounded with pangas, spears and other crude weapons in a series of attacks linked to witchcraft in Makete District, Iringa Region.
Revealing this, Iringa Regional Police Commander Omar Mganga said the incidents took place in Ndao, Nungu and Kinyika villages in Makete District, towards the end of last month.
According to police investigations, a few days before the killings, some villagers conducted a secret ballot to unearth suspects thought to be involved in witchcraft.

She wrote some pretty darn good books about her family, too...
I particularly enjoyed "Raising Demons"...

| Fear, Scape Goats, The Lottery, And Mob Mentality | Aug 3rd. at 3:26:03 pm EDT |

The article given here mentions a "secret ballot to unearth suspects thought to be involved in witchcraft" that took place just days before the witch hunt murders.
A secret ballot is usually used in elections.
This story, however, calls to mind a classic American short story by Shirley Jackson named "The Lottery" in which a lottery is held and the "winner" is stoned to death.
The article here tells of a mob mentality and a literal witch-hunt murders.
In the Makete District murders, *suspicions*of witchcraft became *conviction (s) * and contrived self-fulfilling self-aggrandizing impetus in the minds of the mob who set out to kill the scapegoats so that the "righteous people" could focus on other people's evils while hunting people down and murdering them (I think I’ve heard that in Politics …sarcasm) .
Some elements in both the article here and The Lottery:
* The stability of the whole depends on the murder of the few (scapegoat sacrifices) .
* Behind every perfect society is an unwanted element and it's often actually some of the intellectually stunted and emotionally retarded righteous ones.
* Righteous good is overshadowed with revealing acts of murderous evil.
Would you believe Shirley Jackson got death threats after writing the short story The Lottery (1940) ?

"Youths" were going around attacking people for being witches. Sounds to me like another case of older people recruiting younger ones to do their dirty work.
And to the previous poster: I hope it doesn't come to that, but bravo to you for standing your ground.

Hopefully this will never happen here in the States. If it does however, let it be know to all that this "Witch", Pagan actually, has teeth and will bite when threatened.
