Tanzanian Student Slaughtered In ‘Witchcraft Ritual’

Author: Nyamanoko Bwire   Source: Arusha Times (Tanzania)

Title: STUDENT SLAUGHTERED IN ‘WITCHCRAFT RITUAL’

Cases of witchcraft driven murders involving skinning of human beings in pursuit of wealth that were once rampant in southern Tanzania have debuted in Arusha with the slaughter of a female student.

Norah Makundi, a former trainee of the MOMESCO College in Arusha, was recently drugged, strangled and her dead body was to be dipped into the Lake Duluti in Tengeru area for a few days before being skinned for an alleged voodoo ritual. Her murder is reported to have been driven by some witch craft beliefs that the assailants would eventually become rich.

A Whole Other Kind Of Meat... Sep 22nd. at 8:43:28 am EDT

by Taenn (Leicester, England) - wc_xemail

*laughs at the meat analogy*

Whilst I understand that it takes a few differnet kind sof meat to make a deli, I still can't believe this article. (I'm not doing very well with witchvox today!) How these people reason is just amazing - and I'm a proud user of teenage logic, so I know how far the the extremes you can go and still claim to be telling the truth!

The muder describes in the article above is without a doubt one of the most horrific things I have ever heard - and my prayers go to that girl, they really do. And I also pray for her killers that they may find forgiveness, but I have to say their motives are just a little farfetched. And if this sounds as though I am belittling the tragedy of what happened I'm sorry, but it seems to me that most of what was written in that article is based on random prejudices, superstitions and misunderstood customs because I cannot believe that anthing described there could be related to witchcraft.

And if the writers had researched the article at all, I'm pretty sure they'd agree with me.

To begin with, voodoo has nothing to do with witchcraft. It is a agical prcatise assitgned to another culture and religion entirely. It;s just the same as saying satanism is witchcraft, or mouse meat is beef!

Then you hae the fac that the rleigion seems to skip throughout the article. Firsth they were witches. then a shaman witch-doctor came involved, and then we were doing full out voodun rituals again! What was going on?

And don't even get me started on the lack of any reliable resources. I don't think there was a single quote there fro any of the authorities!

An harm ye none sums it up pretty well if you ask me.

PLEEEEZE!!! Sep 22nd. at 4:11:46 am EDT

by Jervamp (Effingham, IL) - wc_xemail

How has an article about a senseless, horrible crime truned into a pagan free-for-all, complete with name calling etc.? There are parts of the world that don't have the same background and views we do. Also language creates an atmosphere where sometimes words get used that are just what the interperator feels is closest to what is being said.
I do not know if this is how "witch" came to be the term used here. It doesn't matter. The people that want to find a reason to burn a "witch" be it a Wiccan, Shamman, or whatever will find the reason they need. Peaceful witches, and not all are peaceful, will decry this as horrible reporting or someone doing something in the name of something that it really isn't.
All it really is about is words. Take meat, for example. Not all meat is beef. All beef is meat. See where I'm going? A rotten slab of sewer rat is still, in a general way, meat. Just not the meat a sane, health minded person would choose. And no, all the oddball meats don't taste like chicken!

Blessings, Jer
P.S. We need to stop arguing amoungst ourselves over what is the best meat. It takes all kinds to make a Deli.

Let Me Clear Something Up... Sep 22nd. at 1:09:58 am EDT

by Yael Sanchez (New Orleans, LA) - wc_xemail

I thank all those who have voiced their opinions here, as I may have not made myself clear and thus have unwillingly upset some of you with my comment.

At the moment, yes, I was heated as to the story's nature of violence and brutality and even more upset at the thought that a witch had been behind it all. In reciting the Rede, I was merely quoting my religious view...as many Wiccans are prone in doing. But, the body of the comment was a GENERAL comment in that anyone practacing Wicca/Witchcraft/Paganism will now be a target for more religious discrimmination based on this story's content. Anyone reading this article who is unaware of the many forms of witchcraft will automatically assume that Wiccans, Witches, Pagans, Occultists, Metaphysicists, Astrologers, Numerologists, etc., are one and the same. So, my upset was this: Anyone practicing a nature-based religion (and, yes, I have met many "Witches" who do not call themselves Pagans or Wiccans who feel Witchcraft IS a religion) have now been set back on their endeavors for religious tolerance and equality.

So, I am sorry to have upset those who did not see beyond the "Wiccan Rede" quote in my last comment and missed the message I had intentionally stated. The Rede is not law, it is not a commandment, but it is to those who do see it for what it is. It is a moral code and morality is simply a form of manners. Every religion has it's own moral code of ethics. As to how anyone got the message that I felt that Wicca is a one true religion...I have no idea. I have never stated that, and I wish people would see beyond their own noses before making such false claims against someone.

I believe that every religion is right for that person's individual spritual level and belief. I feel every religion has equal right to be here and be practiced. I feel everyone has every right to chose what religion is best suited for them without having to be discrimminated against. So, I am sorry if I offended some of you. That was never my intention. I hope that all of you can find peace with yourselves, for I never meant any ill will. Blessed Be and May the God and Goddess bless you and in all you endeavor to be.

Most SIncerely,
Yael

P.S. To the Floridian who sent me an e-mail, I thank you for your honesty. Just a bit of advice, though...be careful not to condisend. We are all adults here (hopefully) and should be conducting ourselves as such. Respect given is respect earned. Blessed Be.

Defining Witchcraft Sep 21st. at 11:02:01 pm EDT

by OakWillow (Pacific NW) - wc_xemail

Pagans, Wiccans, Witches, etc. need to quit assuming that the term Witchcraft means the same thing the world over! It doesn't. And certainly not all Witches or Witchcraft practitioners are Wiccan. Witchcraft is not even considered a religion by many people. We can call ourselves Witches if we feel we need to but in doing so we open ourselves to all definitions of the term. Trying to get everyone in the world (or even just in this country) to adhere to the same definition of Witchcraft is no different than (and just as futile as) those who try to convince others that their interpretation of the bible is the only "right" one. There is a fine line between stating your care and "preaching" the "true meaning" of anything.

No Connection. Sep 21st. at 9:21:32 pm EDT

by Finrod (Canberra, Australia.) - wc_xemail

This is an upsetting story, but there's no reason to tie one's self in knots about a slur against Wicca when this case has nothing whatsoever to do with it. There are still plenty of paleopagans in the world who know nothing of the Rede, and wouldn't care if they did. The witch doctor in question is probably a typical village sorcerer.

You all that stuff about not harming others is such a pain in the butt ...

Very Sad Sep 21st. at 6:51:36 pm EDT

by Anara (Florida) - wc_xemail

I feel so bad for that poor child, and I would curse the people and witch doctor with every curse I know. I am not Wiccan, so I am not going to say the Wiccan rede a thousand times as much as a Fundamentalist Christian would say, "Don't suffer a Witch to live." Indeed, the rede has become like that statement, driven down the throats who are not of that path. That rede should not be a universal term posted on all Pagans and Witches, it belongs soley to Wicca. All I can say is sad......

Words Of A Soon 2 B Convict To Convict Religion Sep 21st. at 5:20:35 pm EDT

by karrie9 (USA) - wc_xemail

It doesn't matter if we convict the whole of Catholicism because of "some" priests or "witchcraft" because of some criminals using their ignorant twisted versions of it to rationalize and *blame* (a contagious poison that the public oddly goes for and laps up) .

Stories such as this hold up a mirror to humanity and its deficits in general populations.

Any religion can be twisted, changed, and used as an excuse to hurt others -- be it jihads, crusades, inquisitions, witch-hunts, and other various brutal assaults such as this one.

So, ah, they knew the girl, as many who assault women do, and strangled her, and just happened to be naked...

But ... it is witchcraft to blame. Riiiiiiiight.

Mentally ill and in trouble? Rationalize it and blame it on something society is sure to blame along with you.

The blame game (an element of the criminal mind reflected in the populace) -- We have lasers and nanotechnology, yet it is still big.

Razzle dazzle them ... (reference to the movie Chicago) .

I can see our next needed frontier clearly.

Outrageous!!!!! Sep 21st. at 4:43:30 pm EDT

by Yael Sanchez (New Orleans, LA) - wc_xemail

Let me make this clear for all cowans reading this article...Witches will never, EVER ask someone to commit such brutality!!!! I am so outraged at the fact that they have called this man a witch! Nut-bag, loser, crazed psychopath seems more befitting of this monster!!! Our foothold on religious tolerance loosens with every story like this! Christians will only use this to fuel their religious monopoly, instead of learning to accept and become tolerant of other religious diversities! I don't think I have ever been angrier at an article than now! I have worked so very hard at getting others to understand that Wicca/Witchcraft/Paganism is a peaceful, nature-loving, respecting-of-life religion...and this story comes along to mock my every attempt! Just a word to all dabblers. con-artists, exploiters of the Craft...beware! All that you sow, you shall reap! You WILL pay for the pains you have caused in THIS lifetime! May the spirits of your ancestors leave you no peace!

Blessed be those who follow in their paths to spiritual enlightenment! May the God and Goddess bless all those who seek to better themselves!

"Eight Words The Wiccan Rede Fullfil,
An Ye Harm None, Do What Thou Will" - from the Rede of the Wicca

Bright Blessings!
Yael
