Playmate, Witch And Now Eco Warrior Trying To Shut Down Heathrow

Author: Robert Mendick and Nigel Rosser Source: This Is London

Title: PLAYMATE, WITCH AND NOW ECO WARRIOR TRYING TO SHUT DOWN HEATHROW
One of the organisers of a mass protest trying to shut down a Heathrow terminal is a former soft-porn model turned witch.
Thousands of anti-aviation activists are expected to descend on Heathrow on Monday in an attempt to occupy Terminal 1, causing chaos for passengers.
They are protesting against the airport's proposed expansion - the Government is widely expected to give the go-ahead for a third runway next week.
The Evening Standard can reveal today that a leading member of protest group Climate Rush is a former Playboy playmate of the month.

This is what passes for journalism today. What a sad, sad world we live in.
Reading the story itself reveals that this woman is not trying to shut down Heathrow but protesting against an extra runway. Talk about making a big exaggeration to grab the attention of readers.
I still don't get what being a former centrefold for the like of Page 3 and Playboy has to do with the protest and I don't really see what bringing her personal beliefs and pratices into it has to do with it either. There will probably be Christian protestors, Atheist protestors, possibly some Muslims, possibly Pagan protestors as well. What's the big deal.
They plan to bring a bit of disruption to Terminal 1? Somehow I don't really think they will be able to top the chaos of Terminal 5. (Yes, I'm trying to be snide and funny, no offense to anyone and I do support peaceful protest)
A more accurate headline...

April Fool's is coming early, it seems. Sorry, I don't take Playboy Bunnies seriously. Any self-respecting pagan should be offended by this twit trying to represent the pagan community. It's another black eye for us. 'Witch and now Eco-Warrior'? Give me a break. This bimbo ought to go back to her porn job and leave it at that. Pathetic.

won't make it go away.
The media has certainly gone downhill since the days of Edward R. Murrow. In fact, it was the movie, "Good Night and Good Luck" that brought home the differences that I missed. It was in the articulation and the presentation of the facts as they were- and not the seeking of sensationalism that made me miss those days when one could look up to a newspaper or a TV anchorman or the Radio news people with the respect they once sought to earn. Now, one can only view many with contempt for their presentations- which does nothing for their current credibility. Granted, she may be a witch and a former Playmate, but that should not bury her actions-or the point she is trying to make. An aircraft runway takes a lot of what could be useable space for other uses and will indeed displace many from their homes. With the way the economy is, many people cannot move as easily to make room for something that may prove to be just another useless white elephant down the road.

Today's media is not the impartial presenter of news that it was in Edward R. Murrow's day. Then, journalistic integrity was predominant.
Today' it's a business. Headlines that catch your attention and create controversy sell papers; therefore they're much more likely to be used. Journalists vie for attention; if they can research a person and come up with something juicy, so much the better for both their career and their circulation. Note the headline pushes she was both a former Playboy Playmate and a Witch; both will draw attention because they are unusual, out of the ordinary and titillate.
Factually, this headline is both accurate and correct. But most importantly, phrased this way this headline will help sell newspapers. Anyone who has walked around London has seen the Evening Standard headlines screaming out from the newsstands (for non-London visitors, see the picture at [Web LINK] ) . It’s an effective way to sell newspapers.
So until witches (and Playboy Playmates) become commonplace to the point where being one is neither unusual nor out of the ordinary it will continue to sell newspapers and make the headlines.

apparently a liberal democrat and a journalist..
funny those qualities didn't make the headline. As usual, the report picked words for the headline meant to grab the attention (and ire) , regardless of their relevance.
Using playmate, witch or warrior in a headline will always titillate the sad masses who have no understanding, and therefor are afraid.
Fear and horror will always sell more papers than hope and joy.
"Concerned citizen leads peaceful protest against airport expansion" would not have been nearly as widely read, nor sold as many papers. But it would have been much more accurate.

When will the term "witch" stop being used as a pejorative? I find it offensive and ridiculous that the point of the article seems to be to discredit the anti-aviation protesters simply by affiliation with things that people consider (wrongly) to be bad. Similarly, I don't find anything wrong with her comfort to have pictures taken of her body.
It seems that people lump "porn star," "witch," and "protester" with "murderer" and "rapist." How ludicrous is that?
