University Calls Halt To Degree In Homeopathy

Author: Peter Dominiczak   Source: This Is London

Title: UNIVERSITY CALLS HALT TO DEGREE IN HOMEOPATHY

A London university has scrapped a degree which critics compared to a qualification in witchcraft.

Westminster University has been criticised for wasting taxpayers' money by offering a BSc in homeopathy.

Scientists say it has no academic value and is merely a form of "quackery" with no proven medical benefits.

I'm all for proven alternative remedies (herbalism, acupuncture, etc) , homeopathy has not been proven and the very concept sounds ludicrous to me. It's not about being "uncomfortable" with the concept, it's about giving people degrees in peddling sham "cures".

But the medical community doesn't object to homoeopathy because it makes them feel uncomfortable or because they think it'd have them out of business if word got out it worked, they object because they honestly believe it does not work, that those who peddle it are quacks who take advantage of the ill to make money by selling them sugar pills.

They believe this because every credible (by their standards) study has shown that (a) it does not work and (b) there is no reason why it should work (given that the 'stronger' dilutions actually go past the point where the origional substance is still present, so most scientists and doctors are at a loss to understand how it could work) .

Now should some credible studies prove that it works, I suspect there would be a lot of red faces, a lot of arguing, a lot of sniping in peer reviewed journals, but after all that died down homoeopathy would become an accepted aspect of modern medicine.

Until such a study appears then homoeopathy will continue to be considered quakery. And any university that teaches it will be laughed out of academic circles. Sorry but that's how the scientific community works. If you can't prove your treatment works (with something more solid than anecdotal evidence) then it will not be accepted.

"no academic value" = It's useful information but makes people uncomfortable, so we're going to pretend it's bad somehow and sweep it under the rug.

I long for a day in which being uncomfortable or offended only gets you laughed at.

Wonder if they're going after the Psychology program next. When was the last time you heard about an insane person being cured outside of the Bible?

"No Academic Value" Degrees? May 29th. at 1:35:51 pm EDT

Aleyinn (Dundalk, Maryland) - Email Me

So the complaint is public money funding degrees with no academic value.

Methinks we could use some of that taxpayer-fury in the US and our surfeit of public schools handing out meaningless five-year degrees to so many so-called "student"-athletes...
