Scented Candles: Toxic Tat Or A Real Treat?

Author: Becky Pugh and Nick Collins Source: The Telegraph (UK)

Title: SCENTED CANDLES: TOXIC TAT OR A REAL TREAT?
LOVE THEM - By Becky Pugh
I long ago did away with Diet Coke, I don't mind giving up processed ham and smoking is clearly for fools. But the one pleasure I refuse to surrender – whether or not there is truth in the reports that it carries a risk of cancer – is my love of scented candles.
Exotic, luxurious and peaceful, to me they are part of the winding-down process of any day. They represent everything that the brightly lit, highly charged office is not. They are warm, convivial and utterly life-enhancing. If I sound deranged, I promise I'm not.
LOATHE THEM - By Nick Collins
Heavens above. Not only have they spread into every single bit of available shelf space, but my flat smells like the Body Shop has vomited in it. Now it emerges that “pretty” scented candles are giving me cancer. Good grief.
As a man, I am blessed with the clarity of mind to know that candles exist for one purely functional purpose. God invented candles so that we’d have something to play with in restaurants while waiting for the starter to arrive. That’s it. That’s their raison d’ętre.

I always thought that humans invented candles. You learn something new every day.

I've been arguing against candles for years now. Ten years ago a big box candle retailer opened a store next to my workplace. After 10 years the constant annoying cough and headache, turned into full blown asthma. People are surprised about increases in previously uncommon childhood conditions. Maybe they should look at the increase in synthetically scented home and beauty products.

Loving the vocabulary! I'll have to work 'fripperies' into a paranoid rant next time I think I'm being lied to.
There's a joke about candle smog and religious trance in there somewhere, but I'm not fully caffeinated yet, so I'll leave it for someone who's less of a curmudgeon.
Maybe I should light a candle.
And I can't wait for the debate on the health benefits and dangers of using Monsanto's gm soybeans for the "safe" soy candles.
