With Fife And Drum: Music, Memories And Customs Of An Irish Tradition

Irish traditional music and those who play it currently enjoy a worldwide reputation and this is well represented on the heritage book shelves.
But it is sometimes forgotten that there is another musical tradition in Ireland which is also very much alive.
It is the stirring sound of the fife and Lambeg drum, a unique aspect of Ulster folk culture which goes back 200 years and is, of course, primarily associated with the Orange Order.
Reference works on the subject are fairly scarce but a scholarly new book has now been published which takes an in-depth look at the tradition.

My uncle played the flute in an Orange band. I've heard a lot of their music and it can be very well played, very complex pieces of music but the way it is perceived and the way it is used is a very negative thing. If you take the music by itself that's fine but it is very difficult to disassociate it from the Troubles and that is the big problem.
