Find of Lifetime as Dig Reveals Sacred Ancient Shrine

Author: Richard Sherriff Source: IcNorthernIreland

Title: FIND OF LIFETIME AS DIG REVEALS SACRED ANCIENT SHRINE
One of the most important holy relics discovered in Ireland has been described as the find of a lifetime by the man who unearthed it.
Dating back to 1200 AD, the eight-inch bronze bell shrine was discovered on a dig near Ballycastle and is the first of only eight in Ireland to be found in situ as left by the people who used it as part of their worship.
The prized object was found this summer by Brian Williams of the Do E Environment and Heritage Service working with archaeologists from Queen's University on the site close to Fair Head on the Antrim coast.

Unfortunately, very few "treasures" and ancient relics are left in Ireland, beneath the ground or over it. Most of the relics that had any material value vanished during the viking raids at the end of the 8th century. Like Scotland, Ireland was practically under seige, and many, indeed most monasteries and holy sites were looted for anything that held value.
Such finds as this are rare in Ireland, even though the digs to uncover them are not rare. Hundreds of sites that once held monasteries, or settlements around Ireland have been or are being excavated, but hold little more than stone memories of the walls that once stood there.

Having spent a fair bit of time in this part of Ireland, I can only imagine the extent of religious treasures buried beneath the sod...
