Green Spaces 'Reduce Health Gap'

Author: BBC News Source: BBC

Title: GREEN SPACES 'REDUCE HEALTH GAP'
A bit of greenery near our homes can cut the "health gap" between rich and poor, say researchers from two Scottish universities.
Even small parks in the heart of our cities can protect us from strokes and heart disease, perhaps by cutting stress or boosting exercise.
Across the country, there are "health inequalities" related to income and social deprivation, which generally reflect differences in lifestyle, diet, and, to some extent, access to medical care.
However, the researchers found that living near parks, woodland or other open spaces helped reduce these inequalities, regardless of social class.

It might be a start, but only a start. Getting rid of old abandoned buildings and cleaning up empty spaces to provide such areas is not a new idea. Turning empty farm fields into green and productive spaces instead of strip malls, golf courses and car lots would help. It could also go in tandem with cleaning up and lowering prices in health care and streamlining hospital paperwork too. All which seem hardly likely--as parks provide little revenue-the same as empty spaces.

Now if only they could actually put more parks in urban areas. I remember Birmingham, AL having a lot of parks, but most other cities don't seem to care about having Nature close enough to walk to.
It is good to see evidence of the restorative powers of nature in scientific circles. Although the comment, "environments that promote good health might be crucial in the fight to reduce health inequalities," kind of bothers me. Hello, Captain Obvious?

I have to somewhat agree with what the article said, but I STILL think that some form of universal health coverage AND the rich NOT being so darn GREEDY is a better idea!
Love to all
