Why We Get Fired Up For The New Year

Title: WHY WE GET FIRED UP FOR THE NEW YEAR
As Scotland Gears Up For Its Biggest Annual Bash, We Look At The Roots Of Hogmanay - And The Many Traditions Associated With It
While New Year's Eve is celebrated around the world, Scotland has a long and rich heritage associated with the event that we call Hogmanay.
It is often assumed that the Scots invented the name "Hogmanay". However, there are many conflicting theories about the origin of the word.
The Scandinavian word for the feast preceding Yule was "Hoggo-nott", while the Flemish phrase "hoog min dag" means "great love day".
Hogmanay could also be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon "haleg month", or holy month - or the Gaelic "oge maidne", which means "new morning".

PapaRomeo (Lerwick, Scotland) - Email Me

Thought provoking stuff, but a few minor points:
'Yule' in Shetland is particularly used to refer to midwinter and/or Christmas.
The use of the word 'Hogmanay' seems to be an import to the isles as I've heard any of the indigenous natives use it - "New Year's Eve" and "New'erd'y" being more usual locally.
The Up Helly Aa celebrations alluded to in the article have only been in their current form since some Victorian Lerwick men thought it would be a laugh to dress up as vikings. Celebrated on the last Tuesday in January, Up Helly Aa stems back to the old calendar when Christmas was observed on the 6th (or sometimes 5th) of January. Celebrations lasted throughout the month (the "fower an' twinty days o' Yule") , culminating in the fire festival of Up Helly Aa.
I remember overhearing a young guiser from the Jarl's Squad explaining his attire to a couple of tourists. Quoth he: "It's an ancient pagan festival." Maybe a half truth is better than no truth at all...
