Scottish Island's Sacred Sunday Under Threat

Author: Ben McConville, AP Source: Google

Title: SCOTTISH ISLAND'S SACRED SUNDAY UNDER THREAT
An unholy row has broken out over a ferry company's decision to sail on Sunday between a remote Scottish island and the mainland.
Residents on the Isle of Lewis who keep a strict Sabbath — no television, no housework, no shopping — are angry that the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry company is to start running services between Stornoway, the island's capital, and Ullapool on the Scottish mainland.
The company, known as CalMac, says it has no choice because not to run the service would potentially put it in breach of European laws on equality. Presbyterian residents on the predominantly Gaelic-speaking island say the service is threatening both their faith and their lifestyle.

""Church attendance will drop, shops will open and crime will go up," he said."
In other words, "Most people on this island find our 1600s-era habits annoying and burdensome, and will happily embrace modern European culture given the least little chance. Then we might be no better than the Episcopalians! Woe betide us!"
It's amazing anyone was actually down AT the dock to notice the ferry had shown up at all. Shouldn't they all have been in church or something? If the island was truly so devout, wouldn't the inhabitants say, "Ferry? There's a Sunday ferry? Really? What for, the whole town's shut down anyways? What a waste of petrol! Someone uses it? Well, yeah, *that guy*, of course, OK, one guy. All that trouble for one guy? Hunh. Well, good luck to him, the rest of us will be enjoying our after-church cold cuts and cheese trays."

That a ferry docking threatens it?
If those as follow that practice wish to continue to do so, nothing is stopping them. Leave the lights and TVs off in your own homes, but don't you dare cut my power. Stay home after having gone your church services, but don't presume to insist that I must do so as well.
I'm sure that there are sects here in America that practice the same way, and the rest of us watching "Sunday Morning" and stopping at the store on the way from UU does nothing to prevent them from doing so.
