Ancient Welsh City Found

Author: News Wales Source: News Wales (UK)

Title: ANCIENT WELSH CITY FOUND
Caer Caradoc at Mynydd y Gaer, Glamorgan, is one of the most important locations in all of ancient British history. It is the fabled fortress city of King Caradoc 1, son of Arch, who fought the Romans from 42-51AD.
And now, a small team of dedicated researchers working with historians Alan Wilson and Baram Blackett, have been able to pinpoint the location of this site. "It is great news for the local, regional and national economy," said Alan Wilson today. "We have been making these discoveries for many years and with the Electrum Cross discovered at nearby St. Peter's in 1990, it looks like a boost for jobs is likely."
The team say tthe discovery of Caer Caradoc, a pre-Roman British city is a severe embarrassment to academics who take no notice of Welsh records.

Arianrhod Giluinmor (Havana, Illinois) - Email Me

Having spent a semester in Wales, along with trips to various magnificent ruins and ancient sites, it comes as no surprise that such a place as Caer Caradoc has been found. The ancient books which have become collectively known as the Mabinogion- are often considered the British equivalent of the Homerian epics of Greece. But tales of lost cities and drowned forests abound in that ancient land. In an earlier post Gwyddno Garanhir was mentioned, and the Lost Five Hundred. Then there are the drowned forests such as Amroth, near Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Caerleon was an important Roman outpost and St. Govan's chapel is one of the oldest in Britain. Wales has many such treasures and I for one am ecstatic that the archaeology is providing basis to the old tales.
Brightest Blessings, Giluinmor

For those who think New Orleans is something new, examine the legend of King Gwyddno. He's mentioned in the legend of Cerredwen, and remains of his Sea Wall are said to still be visible.

Mistress of Ravens (Knoxville, Michigan) - Email Me

I am so glad to hear that someone has discovered this area. It was featured in many writings and historical accounts that I have studied for my academic field. I am not a Welsh scholar, but I certainly like to read about ancient sites in the British Isles. Hopefully, this is the beginning to many more finds to come. I look forward to reading about more.
