Santa Goes Green In Wales

Author: Jenna Towler Source: The Sun (UK)

Title: SANTA GOES GREEN IN WALES
A Welsh town will celebrate an old-school Christmas when Santa ditches his Coca-Cola inspired red suit in favor of traditional pagan green.
Llangollen will recapture ancient Welsh Celtic traditions at its upcoming Christmas Festival instead of going along with the Coca-Cola inspired image of Santa Clause decked all in red.
Father Christmas – known in Wales as Sion Corn - will parade through the town in his true color of green as he heads towards his grotto in the town library on December 2.

I spent most of last year's "holiday season' in Wales while studying in Carmarthen. I think it's absolutely fantastic that some of the old traditions are being reinforced there- like the Mari Llwyd, the Calenig, the Plygain the hunting of the wren, and now Santa as Sion Corn! The atmosphere over there is both vastly different and comfortingly similar at the same time. This year, I intend to fill up a punch bowl with wassail, make a calenig, and read Dylan Thomas's famous story, "A Child's Christmas in Wales". And I know I'm sending this article to my friends in Carmarthen, because they will get a real kick out of this story!
Brightest Blessings, Wonderful holidays to all, whatever you celebrate A.G.

I think green is a good color also. Like an evergreen? Saw Santa in my house when I was about seven. Mom and dad asleep next to me. Horrifying. I suppose there was a reason. Spirits at work?

as some of you already know I was raised in a very non traditional home. Christmas ceased to be a celebration of Christ and more a celebration of family. Religion did not play a part in it. My Father saw to that. A child of the second world war, he is an atheist to the max. So in my heart and mind, Christmas (regardless of the word Christ) has nothing to do with religion but everything to do with Family.
Now Santa, I love all the old world Santa’s we see coming out now, especially the "forest Santa". All dressed in rich brown robes, surrounded by the forest creatures.
But from my childhood of warm family memories, the Jolly old Elf in his Red suit lined with White Fur, all dirty with Soot will always stand out in my memory. Waiting up all night for the faintest sound. Gazing out my window for a glimpse of Rudolph’s nose.
Ahh what a lovely, glorious, innocent time.
So really, I ignore the commercialism.
I just know what I like.
And I like Santa! In all his forms, colours and meanings...well except for when my Uncle tried to tell me that Santa was really Black Pete in disguise and that he would fill my bed full of charcoal if I was bad, at best. Or steal me away from my parents to enslave me in his toy making operation, at worst!!!
hehe
Peace out stranger friends. Linda
