Merlin's 'Too Pagan' For Town

Author: This Is South Wales Source: This Is South Wales (UK)

Title: MERLIN'S 'TOO PAGAN' FOR TOWN
Plans for a statue of Merlin as part of the rebranding of Carmarthen's Greyfriars Shopping Centre as Merlin's Walk are expected to be rejected tomorrow, because of the wizard's "pagan links".
The Greyfriars site dates back to 1282, and is seen as having great historical importance to Carmarthen, as one of the largest Franciscan friaries in Wales.
Council planners gave permission for a name change back in June, but are likely to oppose plans for new signs and a 7ft Merlin statue, at a meeting of Carmarthenshire Council's planning committee tomorrow.

Boggling when you consider the intimate connection Merlin has with Carmarthen.
From Wikipedia:
"According to some variants of the Arthurian legend Merlin was born in a cave outside Carmarthen, with many noting that Merlin may be an anglicised form of Myrddin. ...Many areas surrounding Carmarthen still allude to this, such as the nearby Bryn Myrddin (Merlin's Hill) .
Legend also had it that when a particular tree called 'Merlin's Oak' fell it would be the downfall of the town as well. In order to stop this the tree was dug up when it died and pieces are now in the museum."
