Interior Department Clears Oil Leases In Alaska's North Slope

Author: H. Josef Hebert, Associated Press Source: ENN

Title: INTERIOR DEPARTMENT CLEARS OIL LEASES IN ALASKA'S NORTH SLOPE
The U.S. Interior Department is opening to oil and gas development almost half a million acres (202,350 hectares) of federal land in an ecologically sensitive area of Alaska's North Slope.
The area has been off-limits for decades to protect caribou and migratory birds.
The department said Wednesday it would allow oil development in virtually all the wetlands surrounding Lake Teshekpuk in the northeast corner of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The lake region includes one of Alaska's most important molting areas beyond the Arctic Circle for wild geese and areas sought out by caribou herds for calving.
Henri Bisson, the BLM's director in Alaska, said the leasing program would include thousands of acres around the lake where no surface facilities except for pipelines would be allowed as a way to protect caribou calving areas and geese molting areas.

Well, at least they won't be stringing any pipelines around any erupting volcano anytime soon. But I fear that as long as the need and greed for oil exist-- nature will just have to take a back seat. And in the future- I fear Alaska will be the loser if there are any messes, because the companies doing the drilling will disavow any knowledge of their making. And whatever other industries that are up there will have to look to their own means to protect themselves- or learn how to salvage whatever they can from whatever the oil companies leave behind-- if they can.

This was foreordained from Day One of the present Administration.
It was foreordained by ignoring the importance of CAFE limits on vehicles.
It was foreordained by the people who bought gas guzzling SUVS.
It was foreordained by people who hop into their car for the smallest errands.
It was foreordained by people who refused to live their lives more economically, with less power involved.
Mostly, it was foreordained by all of ourselves.
So, dear Pagan readers, what are YOU doing, and exactly to what extend are you doing these things, to make this drilling necessary, or unnecessary?

What I find funny is that most experts will tell you that driling on the North Slope will not do anything to alleviate oil prices or help with rising consumption.
Ah, the rich get richer and most of us can't do anything but help them. Too dependent upon natural gas and petroleum.
I'd rather save as much as I can for my descendents, but most people just drink thirstily as if there'll always be more tomorrow.
Let's drink to tomorrow, for we'll never see it from today.
