Alaska Wolf Control Program To Continue

Author: Dan Joling, Associated Press Source: Tampa Bay Online

Title: ALASKA WOLF CONTROL PROGRAM TO CONTINUE
A judge on Tuesday denied a request by an animal rights group to immediately halt a population control program that allows shooting wolves from the air.
Superior Court Judge Sharon Gleason said the Board of Game acted properly in adopting emergency regulations last week that make the program conform to state law. That allowed the program to be reinstated more than a week after Gleason ruled it was illegal.
The program, intended to boost moose and caribou populations in five areas of the state, got its start in 2003 in an area of Alaska's Interior where residents had long complained predators were killing too many moose, leaving too few for food.

Whitewolf (Schenectady, New York) - Email Me

Just leave the poor wolves alone???? The Wolf is my own personal totum. I have to agree with what others are saying.... how many moose and deer can the wolves kill in one day? It's a known fact that there are in fact TOO MANY deer here in NY. As for t he moose, that might be a bit of a different story. I simply cannot see what these rich, playboy "hunters" are so upset about. We humans should stay out of the equation and let nature do her job. Killing the wolves is the WRONG thing to do.....
A howl for peace....

Maybe if they reduced the amount of sport hunting going on more moose might have a chance. After all, they are well acquainted with the tactics of wolves. The wolf has always been the bad guy with little fact to back this up. My guess that sport hunters don't want any competition, which is why the wolves have to yield yet again. Wolves don't have money and cannot afford to buy beef -or even pre- hunted moose meat for that matter so hunting is a necessity for them. While I understand Alaska needs certain revenues, killing off the wolves is really not an answer.

LD Wolverine (Edmonton, Ontario) - Email Me

Human's have encroached on the wild's private places so much already. Why is it that the Wolf can no longer have even the most remote of our land? Are we so greedy that we refuse to go to the local grocery store or butcher for our meat rather then compete with the wolves for our food? A wolf can not walk into a grocery store to buy its meat. It HAS TO HUNT. We, as humans, do not. Anyone complaining that there is not enough game to hunt and think that they should then delcare war on a species should be accused of genocide. If a human hunter has a problem downing a moose or deer he/she shouldn't blame the wolf. Perhaps they should either become a better hunter, or become a farmer and farm some cows to eat. Humans do not have exclusive rights. This story appals me and I am very sad about it.
Sadly yours, Linda
