Liberty And Security Clash In Dillingham

Author: Alex deMarban Source: Anchorage Daily News

Title: LIBERTY AND SECURITY CLASH IN DILLINGHAM
If Osama bin Laden ever makes a sneak attack on Dillingham, he might be in big trouble.
That's because the quaint fishing community in Southwest Alaska, population 2,400, recently installed about 80 surveillance cameras at the port and around town, courtesy of a $202,000 Homeland Security grant.
Anchorage has fewer than 40 cameras to protect its port.
Dillingham Police Chief Richard Thompson, who came up with the idea of applying for the grant, said the cameras could stop terrorism in Southwest Alaska someday. More to the point, they may also put an end to the drinking, deaths and drug deals that go down at the port every summer when the town fills up with commercial fishermen.
But some townsfolk are outraged. The only thing being captured by the cameras, they said, are their civil liberties. The white, plastic devices, clustered atop poles at the port or perched on four city buildings, feel like the glaring eyes of Big Brother. Some, with dual lenses for different lighting conditions, even resemble storm trooper helmets from Star Wars.

"The cameras will have other benefits beside prosecuting vandals and thieves, he said. The images will be posted on the city's Web site -- several already show the empty, frozen harbor -- to help fishermen check the weather and keep an eye on their boats. "
I wanna link to see the Frozen Harbor.

all 'round you. If people only knew how often Big Brother is spying on you in everyday life. The camera at the ATM, the security camera on the light pole in the grocery parking lot, the survielence camera on the buisness building next door. And what about those i.d. chips embedded in the products you buy? And the neat "On Star" GPS tracking unit on your vehicle.
Folks aren't really comfortable with them when they are noticed, but isn't it nice to have a video record when something bad happens? Such as the kidnapping that was video taped in Florida last summer, from which the kidnapper was identified.
I think simple cameras in public places probably need to be accepted and treated as one would a physical observer, this one is just sitting inside somewhere looking at a monitor, not sitting in a booth or on a corner. Especially in this day of less dollars for physical police presence, perhaps cameras are the best way to go. They certainly don't seem to be going away.
