House OKs Oil Drilling In Alaska Refuge

Author: H. Josef Hebert, AP Source: ABC News (US)

Title: HOUSE OKS OIL DRILLING IN ALASKA REFUGE
Citing the public outcry over $3-a-gallon gasoline and America's heavy reliance on foreign oil, the House on Thursday voted to open an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling, knowing the prospects for Senate approval were slim.
Drilling proponents argued that the refuge on Alaska's North Slope would provide 1 million barrels a day of additional domestic oil at peak production and reduce the need for imports.
But opponents to developing what environmentalists argue is a pristine area where drilling will harm caribou, polar bears and migratory birds, said Congress should pursue conservation and alternative energy sources that would save more oil than would be tapped from the refuge.

...the price of a gallon of gas was based on the cost of a barrel of oil set by OPEC? Currently, prices fluctuate based on the oil futures set by the commodity traders, if we are to believe the various media sources. From my perspective, futures are the same thing as betting on who will win a sporting event, and the gamblers are primarily wealthy investors. Who is ultimately responsible for the price of gasoline? The consumer.
As we approach the beginning of summer, many Americans are getting ready to enjoy the outdoors. They load up their ATVs, motorcycles, personal water craft, and tune up the power boats. In order to get all these “recreational vehicles” to their destinations, they need to drive trucks and SUVs that consume a gallon of gas every 12-15 miles. While they are “recreating,” their vehicles are burning gasoline and spewing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. At the end of day, they power up the gasoline powered generator so they can have light, and watch TV. For many, this is “camping.”
Until there is a change of attitude towards the continued depletion of non-renewable (at least in our lifetimes) energy sources, we will be at the mercy of the multi-national energy companies, and the elected representatives that have forgotten that as “public servants,” they represent the voters, and not the corporations.
One example of how distorted our views have become arrived in my mailbox the other day. In a magazine from an insurance company, there was an article about a competition for Young Farmers and Ranchers. What was the reward for winning the contest? A 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 pickup truck , with a 5.9L Cummins HO turbo Diesel engine. Just what a 17-year-old needs, right? Perhaps a scholarship would be more beneficial. That way we could encourage the next generation to become more aware of the damage we are doing to the environment, and perhaps influence them to develop the means for decreasing our dependency on fossil fuels.

I'm wondering if the current high price of gas is a hoax to justify the opening of the refuge to drilling. Of course the gas prices won't come down now that they've gotten this high, we can all just suck it up while these yahoos rape what's left of the planet BEFORE bothering to look for alternatives to petroleum.

This has nothing to do with lowering the price of gas or helping the American people. It is unlikely that the price of gas will come down even if the Refuge is opened. I mean, let's face it, our government has proven beyond a doubt that they don't care about us. This is all about it being an election year and the fact that the GOP is in deep doo-doo on more fronts then it can keep up with and they know it. If the Dems retake the House, Bush will be impeached. The Articles of Impeachment have already been written and can be found on the web. This is about political pandering of the GOP to their conservative base, which are jumping like rats from a sinking ship, and are the only hope of saving Bush from impeachment. Expect to see lots more shameful pandering to the conservative religous nut-cases out there.

Well who would have guessed that the House would okay oil drilling In an Alaskan refuge? Yet another accomplishment for the Bush administration. They must be very proud.
This is an example of democracy's not working. The folks who are getting most ripped off can't cast negative votes because they haven't been born yet.

It's really not about the oil, is it? It's all about political clout, and ramrodding, and it stinks from here to eternity. Why do they even pretend to care about the environmental impact? I'm surprised they aren't trying to make cars run on the unfiltered blood of caribou, just to rub it in.

This is NOT going to bring our gas prices down. I live in a hotbed of new natural gas drilling here in CO. We are sitting on one of the largest reserves in the UD and many of us are troubled by the pollution of our river and private wells in just the last two years. All this and they tell us that all the drilling we are doing here in CO will only reduce the overall cost of gas by one cent in about 20 years. GEEEE thanks, that was really worth all of the damage it will do to our local hunting and recreation economy. Folks WE are not going to see this great reduction in the price of our gasoline because they are drilling in these areas, they are going to sell it abroad. They have told us here that all this drilling will not really do much for us at the pump, I doubt that Alaska will either.

"There are simply some places that should be off limits to drilling. The Arctic refuge should be one of them,"
The Alaska National Wildlife Reserve will be exploited, but has been preserved for Wildlife until the price of Oil has risen to the point that Alternatives might bring the price down.
People are going to vote for Cheap Gas the way they've always voted for Bread and Circuses. Remember, Remember, the Tuesday after the First Monday of November.
The best way to conserve Petroleum is to add an additional tax on Gasoline, to cover all its Cultural, Environmental and Political Costs. If you want to reduce Air Pollution, vote for a Trolley Bus, as these are Electric Vehicles with Regenerative Breaking.
"Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y., countered that had Congress passed improved auto fuel economy measures 11 years ago when they were considered, today "we would save far more oil than ANWR would produce."
"This Congress hasn't voted on a single conservation measure since gasoline hit $3 a gallon," said Boehlert. "
The CAFE has been a debacle, removing Station Wagons from the road in favor of larger SUVs. The SUVs count as Trucks, and lower the CAFE for Trucks. If you want Efficient Usage, charge more for Usage.

Drilling in the ANWR would be a waste of time and money, and do almost nothing to reduce the cost of gas. Just to get the oil out of there is about 10 to 15 years of building infrastructure away, and would lower the cost of gas at the pump maybe $0.01 when it got here. If everybody would walk or ride a bike on trips of less than one mile we could reduce the cost of gas by 5 cents, in less than a year, and reduce pollution besides. Not to mention the personal benefit of moving your body WITH your body as opposed to burning dead dinos. But I shouldn't have to tell Pagans about how to save the Earth...

I don't know how many people have been to Alaska. But I have. It's quite possibly the most beautiful state in our United States and definitely one of the lovliest places in the world. Alaska has amazing terrain and a unique array of animals that will be destroyed with oil drilling on the North Slope.
Instead of destroying one of our nation's treasures, maybe more of us should ride bikes or walk to work or school, if possible. Or even carpool there if necessary. There are many ways to bring down gas prices. And honestly? I'm willing to pay a bit more at the pump to save Alaska.
The additional web link at the bottom of my post displays what the government would be destroying if they were to drill in Alaska. This photograph was taken by me on my trip to Alaska last summer.
