Bill Would Permanently Bar Drilling In Alaskan Refuge

Author: AP Source: CNN

Title: BILL WOULD PERMANENTLY BAR DRILLING IN ALASKAN REFUGE
Opponents of oil drilling in an Alaskan wildlife refuge are going on the offense after playing defense for a quarter of a century. They want the new Democratic Congress to make an oft-challenged drilling ban permanent.
Legislation introduced in the House on Friday would make the oil-rich 1.2 million-acre coastal strip of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge a permanently protected wilderness and end repeated efforts to open the area east of the Prudhoe oil field to energy companies.
"The consensus is that there should not be drilling in the refuge, so the logical next step is to pass legislation which turns it into a wilderness," Rep. Edward Markey, chief sponsor of the legislation, said in an interview.
The Massachusetts Democrat has introduced similar legislation in each of the last three congressional sessions. However, the House has approved drilling in the refuge a half dozen times, only to see the effort die in the Senate were supporters couldn't muster the 60 votes to overcome a likely filibuster.
This time, with Democrats in the majority and a number of moderate Republicans on record as opposed to drilling, Markey believe he has a good chance in the House to go one step farther and declare the refuge permanently off-limits to oil development.

Lady Dragonfly (Riverton, Utah) - Email Me

It's about time we had people in politics who cared about the world we live in enough to preserve a small portion of it.

Drilling in ANWR was always a boon doggle to fool those that understood neither odds nor just how much oil we actually use a year.
The US Geological survey did a survey in area 1002 (where they want to drill) . And the most likley scenerio is that the area holds is 4.3 billion barrels. The average it's likly to have is 7.7 billion.
Of course, we use over 7 billion barrels a year and rising. The oil companies stretch the amount in ANWR by first using the highest (and least likely amount) of oil ANWR may hold and then adding the oil from the surrounding area (which already has oil wells)
Add to this the outright lying by claiming it won't affect the environment and that it would only cover 2000 acres (which considering they didn't include roads or the pipes not touching the ground is like saying my 3x5 foot desk only covers 5 square inches of my room)
And there's still the fact that any drilling would take at least 10 years to get up and running and there's nothing to make the oil companies sell any of that oil in the US. (did we forget CHINA needs oil too?)
So drilling in ANWR would ruin a national treasure (which belongs to all of us, not just those in Alaska) and wouldn't even pay off. It would be like trading off a family heirloom for a cheesburger some one else got to eat.
So why the obsession over drilling then? Why the millions spent by oil companies and right wing think tanks to make people beleive stuff that just isn't true? Well, first lest not forget that oil companies get big subsidies just for looking for oil. They don't have to find it to make money. And secondly, this seems to have become a way for the right to stick it to the left.
Some may want to frame this as a "Tyrrany of the majority". Being a gay guy in a state that put it in it's constitution that I am second class citizen, I think I'm in a better position to know what a tyrrany of the majority actually looks like. And protecting a national treasure doesn't qualify

Let's drill there. Let's drill all up and down the coast. Let's drill everywhere. Who cares about preserving any part of nature. Why not build 12 and 16 cylander engines that only get 2 mpg to use up all the extra oil we find.
That coughing sound is only your children dying from all of the pollution related diseases their going to have. But, hey, that's only going to affect the poor the hardest. Oh, no it won't, we'll just give'em a choice now that all the social programs are in the hands of the Churches. Convert or die.
