Student Groups Given Equal Access To Facility Use, Fundraising Tools

Author: Robinson Duffy Source: Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (AK)

Title: STUDENT GROUPS GIVEN EQUAL ACCESS TO FACILITY USE, FUNDRAISING TOOLS
The school board Tuesday night approved a policy guaranteeing all student-initiated groups equal access to school facilities and the opportunity to raise funds.
The federal Equal Access Act, signed into law in 1984 and upheld by the Supreme Court in 1990, requires any school district that receives federal funds to allow students to start groups or clubs and hold meetings in the school and advertise in school bulletins or over the public-address system. The groups can be based on anything — religion, hobbies, politics, sports — as long as the school district allows one group, it can’t deny any others.
Board member Sue Hull wanted to require that students get parental permission before taking part in a student-led group. She said she’s concerned that the school district has no control over what type of groups students start or take part in at school.
“Like a witchcraft club or a dark arts club,” she said. “We wouldn’t be able to say that’s not an appropriate group to be formed.”

It is pretty good news - even her mention of witchcraft clubs and dark arts clubs didn't make them change their minds about equal access for all clubs. That shows a certain amount of the sense we all hope that governing groups will show. That seems to be rather rare today.

She-- wouldn't be able to say that that's not an appropriate club for students to join. Just what they need- another Madame Umbridge.

...the quote that mentions "witchcraft" and the "dark arts"?
Is that really it?
Man, must be a slow news day.
No one agreed with her because she's a control-hungry idiot. End of story.

Idiots regularly get elected to school boards all over the world. Nobody agreed with her. Nothings came of it. It's non-news.
