Officials: Mansion Fire Possibly Caused By Candles From Seance

Author: The Associated Press Source: Montgomery Advertiser (GA)

Title: OFFICIALS: MANSION FIRE POSSIBLY CAUSED BY CANDLES FROM SEANCE
A weekend fire that damaged a 78-year-old mansion was possibly started from candles used by people who were trying to communicate with the dead, officials said.
Baldwin County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. John Murphy said graffiti was found in the attic of the Tampary Mansion along with partly burned candles that indicated a seance had occurred.
Murphy said someone who claimed to have studied the occult recently contacted the Tampary family, saying they knew the mansion was frequented by people who went there to attempt to commune with a purported "ghost of Malbis."

...Is an oft-ignored word.
Never did anything on a dare if I knew it was wrong and setting foot on someone else's property without their permission is wrong, as is stealing.
Plenty of room in this world for healthy ethical challenges and creativity -- if more kids grow up around that, they're less likely to smash glass bottles in the streets for fun, steal, trespass, and so on.

There're some cheap prayer candles, on the market, that burst into flame as soon as your back is turned. Someone may have left one of these for a cleansing.
Candles being used in a Seance would not have been a danger, since someone would have been there, at the time. A bunch of kids might have thought a loose fire was a devine manifestation, until it chased them out of there.
A House Sitter would have been a nice idea.

But if this house had burned down due to kids breaking in to smoke crack, would it have made the news? Most likely not. However, toss in an "Occult Connection" -- BOOM! -- story. Sigh.

This is such a sad situation for the family to have to deal with. Stealing wallpaper?!! What is wrong with people? I understand the comment about kids being dared, etc. That often happens. Kids make up stories about "the haunted house on the corner" and "I dare you to go in". But, to set the place on fire! Or steal things from inside! I am guilty of trespassing in the past. When I was a young teen I entered an abandoned home. But, I did not go in and destroy the place. And not just because there was nothing there to destroy, but because at no time did that even enter my mind. It was said that the place was haunted. I didn't believe it and set out to "prove" to my friends that it wasn't. I was caught by the police and lectured. Then my mother was informed and I caught a whole world of trouble from her. I never made that mistake again. If I had even thought of stealing things from a house, abandoned or not, I don't think I would be here today.
There is no excuse for the behavior of the people that set this house on fire. Nor for the people before them (if it was someone else and not the same people holding the seance) that stole furnishings and wallpaper from this house. Whether the family was having a hard time selling the place, not getting it clean up in what someone may consider a timely fashion, or not charging people to come into their family home and hold seances or tours..this was their family members house. A place that someone they loved lived. It should have been respected. I feel bad for the family. I can only imagine the pain they must be feeling right now. And the violation they must have been feeling all this time and even more so now. May they all find peace. And I hope they find out who did this and they are able to get justice.

Sounds like they killed two birds with one stone--they made trespassing deadly dangerous, and let the sluggish estate process take notice. The probate process is criminally slow in most every state, is doubly hampered by the feds and their bloody thirst for death taxes, and should under no circumstances ever be handled by family members. There are no guarantees in life. If you are over 18, as a prospective corpse you should have clear medical directives, a clearly articulated 'power of attorney' candidate, a notarized will and a choice candidate for executor. Ideally (and despite the fact that it will cost you in fees) , that executor would be an experienced estate and wills attorney that sidelines as a mediator. Anything less is a recipe for chaos and the type of family infighting that can never be repaired. You think you know your brothers and sisters, your stepparents? Trust me, you don't.
