We're Called To Introduce All Kinds Of Faiths To Our Readers

Author: Kay Campbell Source: The Huntsville Times (AL)

Title: WE'RE CALLED TO INTRODUCE ALL KINDS OF FAITHS TO OUR READERS
The woman who called me was concerned that I had given mention to a group who lets a group of Wiccans sometimes use their facility.
"Do you know they are witches?" the lady asked me.
"Yes," I said. "And Wiccans are hard to find because they're scared of the Christians."
The woman was silent for a long minute.
"And you're the Faith and Values editor?" she asked, sounding like she hoped I wasn't.
"Yes, Ma'am," I told her, "but I don't write just about Christian values."
That call - especially since I have talked a Wiccan into letting me do a story later this month - set me to thinking about beliefs and values, about perceptions and about fear of others.

In my local newspaper, all the articles on religion are about Christian sects that everyone knows (and, usually in September, they'll have a token article on Yom Kippur for the Jewish community) . She is exactly right when she said that the religion section should include all religions, not just the ones of the majority. Everyone knows how to celebrate Christmas, most people know how to celebrate Hanukkah , but few people (even in the pagan community) know how to celebrate Yule. Perhaps with more open minded journalists like Ms. Campbell out there, paganism won't seem so scary to the Christians and they can focus their energy on other matters (such as trying to save their religion from being controlled by the Christian Taliban) .

Ok, I suppose she is doing us a favor by trying to open up the field. But when I hear the sanctimonious tones of it being up to God 'to judge our beliefs and behaviors,' or how this blessed peacemaker has been 'called to introduce all kinds of faiths to our reader' . . . well, let's just say I get a strong urge to cut a loud one.

Given the fact that such phrases as "Christian love," "Christian values," and "biblical truth" practically define the word "oxymoron," I'm not surprised that the bimbo hung up on Ms. Campbell. Most Christians can't stand up to logic and reason.

You are getting religious rants from your dentist? Yes, you definitely need a new one . You have hired a professional, i.e. put him on your payroll, to perform a professional service. You are the employer, he the employee. He's out of line, fire him.
Even if you did start the conversation by putting your religion in his face, he should know better. And next time, keep your religion out of the mix.
If this so-called professional started the conversation, that should have been your last trip to see him. If this is standard behavior in your community, let the next pro you hire know up front you won't tolerate this sort of thing. You are there for dental work, not to be 'saved'.

How nice to see an article that is open and explains that differences in religion are not the basis for fear.... but for free exploration.

Ms. Campbell, if more people shared your values, the bandage committee would be out of business.
One job I would dearly love to be out of. Sadly, I figure it's pretty secure (alas, people just seem to keep hanging up the phone) ...
...but hope springs eternal, and I do so love the feeling I get when someone nurtures it for just a little while. So much nicer than the feeling of futility I get trying to convince others to share Ms. Campbell's attitude.
Father and Mother bless you, dear. And your column. And your word processor.
Whilst we are worrying about the beam in our neighbors' eye, let us not forget to attend the mote in our own. Those boogers *grow*, y'know; without caution, we might one day discover we've become that which we despise.

Reading this opinion piece reminded me of my brief stint editing three weekly newspapers in the Hampton Roads section of southeast Virginia a few years ago. I had an almost volunteer (we paid them practically nothing) staff of reporters.
One reporter was furious at me because I had reported on PaganNet's Samhain gathering at Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach. I told her that I didn't assign her to the story because I knew it would not be her favorite beat, so to speak. (She was all in favor of Christian community stories.)
As we were "Community" newspapers, I sought to provide a balanced view of community events, NOT just Christian.
I applaud this Faith and Values editor for keeping in mind that not all faiths are some derivative of Christianity and for looking to provide a balanced view.

Very fair and balanced, moreso than Fox News will ever be. One problem with Christian dogmatists is their inability to understand that ALL major world religions, and a few of the minor ones, tend to share the same basic "mores" and "taboos."
Most cultures are not tolerant of rape, murder, child abuse, theft or desecration of anything sacred.
There are those who write here in Wren's Nest, terribly hurt and angry, not able to understand that "Christians" who don't act as Yeheshuah ben Yusef ben El taught will have to face the consequences of their actions. Just as each of us will have to answer for our actions, in this life or the next.
Personally, I see a world full of the once-born, limited in knowledge and wisdom. TIme to quit the vitrolic diatribes and to seek synthesis.
Fight with knowledge and not in ignorance.
