Residents Trace Spooky History Of Kith And Kin Hung As Witches

Author: Jennifer R. Hill   Source: News Courier (AL)

Title: RESIDENTS TRACE SPOOKY HISTORY OF KITH AND KIN HUNG AS WITCHES

During the Salem Witch trials in 1692, 19 innocent men and women were hanged, one man crushed to death by rocks and four left to die in prison. When the hysteria ended, 24 had been convicted as witches and killed.

Centuries later, two friends in Limestone County discovered a common bond among the executed of 17th century Salem, Mass.

Philip Reyer and Steve Latham have been close friends for at least 10 years and have known each other for longer than that. Reyer is Limestone County’s archivist and Latham is a retired schoolteacher.

Their friendship came about over a common interest in history and ancestry. Through their shared interests, they happened to discover that they are distantly related. Reyer and Latham each are descended from women who were executed in the Salem Witch trials.

“Our grandmothers rode the same wagon to be executed, up to Gallows Hill, and now how many hundreds of years later we meet," said Latham.

can lead average people to do completely insane things. I am of the opinion (and it's just my personal opinion, not everyone's) that the poor people murdered by a crazed mob were utterly innocent---and NOT witches. There is no evidence, no physical proof that they were except the trumped up claims made by the accusers to achieve their goal of gaining the accused's property. This was more about petty jealousies over property and status than pagan beliefs. I can't help it---if you want to call me a closet Christian for espousing such ideas, so be it. I think we, as witches/pagans/Heathens/Wiccans do ourselves a disservice by promoting ideas that have no basis in truth. The 'Burning Times' some howl over, saying that millions were slaughtered by the Church sounds too over the top. I know I'm digressing, but often the so-called 'Burning Times' are lumped in with the Salem Witch Trials. The victims of those horrible acts were regular people made into convenient 'scapegoats' to cover another's greedy schemes. I just wish the truth would be made plain to the average person these days that goes to visit Salem about the witch trials. Frankly, the idea of profiting from such an awful event in American history sounds sick to me.

I am related to John Proctor who was hanged on August 19, 1692. He was accused of being a witch, and now I am one.

But that is also the reason why I consider myself a militant Pagan. I vow that this time, we are not going down without a fight.

If the fundies want to create a theocracy here, they will have a heck of a fight this time.

I feel that the Salem Witch Trials were one of the many examples of what happens when politics and religion mix. Those were every difficult times back then and you either conformed or you were dealt with and obviously, the execution of these innocents is certainly proof of this.
It's sad to know that people were THAT paranoid back then and the disturbing thing is what that said paranoia made them do...
