Equal Access In Gadsden

Author: Anniston Star Editorial Source: Anniston Star (AL)

Title: EQUAL ACCESS IN GADSDEN
In June 2001, the U. S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Good News Club v. Milford Central School. The case came about when the school district denied the Good News Club, a private Christian group for children, use of school facilities for weekly after-school meetings that would include lessons and prayer. The school held that such activities were "the equivalent of religious worship" and therefore prohibited under its "community use policy."
In a 6-3 decision the Supreme Court agreed and Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, made it clear that in the court's opinion "Milford's restriction violates the Club's free-speech rights and that no Establishment Clause concern justifies that violation."
Now the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Alabama, which sponsors the Good News Fellowship, has sued the Gadsden Board of Education for doing the same thing the Milford District did — denying it the after-school use of school facilities.
We first have to wonder how closely the Gadsden board and its lawyers have been keeping up with Supreme Court decisions.

GreeneDragon (Palmdale, California) - Email Me

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of CEF by Jerry Falwell's Liberty Council. As in the same group who created the problem with school backpack flyers in Albemarle County, VA (see list of links below) .
Makes me wonder why they (Liberty Council) would do this again after what happened in Virginia. Maybe they did not expect the local school board to do the right thing and decide on the "No Flyers At All" approach in the end? Maybe they wanted pagan flyers to create public outrage? Maybe they want to try again?
I think Liberty Council actually wants non-Xian religious groups allowed on public schools so they can go after a bigger goal. There are some Fundie groups who for a long time have been advocating "destroying the public school system" (see links below) . How easy this will make it for them to say to churchgoing parents "Do you want your kids at a school that allows ``Satanists`` to meet and worship there?!"
Below are two lists of links (I hope these format OK) . The first set go to offsite links about "destroying the public schools", the second set go to previous Wren's Nest articles about Albemarle.

Lora (Leominster, Massachusetts) - Email Me

I mean, in real life. They take trailers to county fairs, type of thing.
Honestly, it looks like some exploitative child abuse to me. I have not the words. I took pictures, years ago. The kids get hauled all over the place doing what amounts to a *really weird* dog-and-pony show, the parents/preacher collect a big basket of money, and then they go somewhere else. Like a travelling circus.
I wouldn't want to support that type of exploitation. I really wouldn't. To me, it's no different than taking your kid out of school so that the parents can exhibit his/her birth defect for money, or the beggar parents in Third World countries who deliberately maim their children because disabled kids get more money begging than kids with all their arms and legs. I wouldn't want to support or endorse that, and I would have a real problem--a loud, angry problem--with offering a meeting place to such a group. Would the Supreme Court want to offer the same meeting space to group therapy for recidivist child molesters? Somehow, I'm thinking they'd find that objectionable for obvious reasons.

Myrr (Baldwin, Georgia) - Email Me

When I was in high school, in 1980, a friend of mine started a prayer group and the principal of the school told them they had to meet off school grounds. I don't remember my friend making a big deal out of it.

. . .a Christian afterschool group is allowed to meet, then so should a Pagan afterschool group. I have no problem with such programs after normal school hours, I just want equal access for all faiths.
