Church Camps Closing Amid Declining Use, Economy

Author: Jay Reeves, The Associated Press Source: Washington Post

Title: CHURCH CAMPS CLOSING AMID DECLINING USE, ECONOMY
Camp Sumatanga has meant Bible stories and softball games for generations of Methodist families. Young and old alike come to the old church retreat for renewal in its quiet coves and chapels.
Today, though, the 1,700-acre retreat is in danger of shutting down.
Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, it's among hundreds of church camps nationwide that are on the critical list. Years of declining usage and the recession have forced administrators to consider closing or cutting services.
The president of the Christian Camp and Conference Association, Bob Kobielush, said dozens of camps nationwide ceased operating in the last three years, and this could be the last summer for many more.

Where will teenagers and pre-teens make out and pretend to have lost their virginity? Oh the humanity. Well, I suppose there's always the fictional friend from Canada.

Maybe these Christians who otherwise would send money to put their children in " Christian" camps might, oh I dunno, use that same money to feed and clothe the hungry. You know, like what Jesus taught about compassion to others.
I've always thought that such things as " Christian youth camps" and the failed Bakkers Christian theme park were attempts by Christians to isolate themselves from the rest of us " pagan" or secular world. The documentary " Jesus Camp" shows quite well what I mean by these Christians isolating their children from even being near people of different faiths than their own. Its one thing to be with a group of fellow believers occasionally but its not healthy to be with them ONLY and to not have any contact outside the group.

what all those empty camps will wind up being, besides pleasant models for another "Life after People" episode.

you know, for as much money as the churches make every week, you would think that they could send some of that money to save these camps if they are so important!
I'm sure the kids would appreciate it more that their camp is funded than that their pastor got a new car!

I grew up near there and had visited there many times. Who knows, If I hit the lottery perhaps a Pagan camp will take it's place.
