'Praying Lady' Watches Over Combs Cemetery

Author: Pat Harris, White River Valley News Source: Northwest Arkansas Times

Title: 'PRAYING LADY' WATCHES OVER COMBS CEMETERY
Like a guardian angel, a sculpture carved of red cedar by a former St. Paul resident watches over Combs Cemetery.
"The creation of this sculpture was a very deeply healing process for me after losing my father, Tanner E. Mahaffey, who was born in St. Paul in 1925," Mike Mahaffey said. "He is deeply missed by all his family and friends in Madison County, and there is a real connection to my roots here that I value highly."
Mahaffey currently lives in Pasco, Wash. He returns home to the St. Paul and Combs area to visit family and friends as often as he can. On one of those trips in September 2005, he and his cousin Joe Dietz visited the Combs Cemetery. Dietz showed him a red cedar tree stump that had been topped to prevent falling limbs from damaging headstones below it.
Mahaffey saw potential in the "rather scraggly stump" and asked about the possibilities of creating a sculpture for the cemetery.

this is an example of generosity and kindness at its best. What a beautiful thing to do for the cemetery. It's a lovely sculpture, encompassing peace, solitude, contemplation. Bravo to the gentleman who created a truly moving tribute to the souls at rest there, and to the living who come to visit.

She is a beautiful woman and I'm happy he was able to see her in the wood. His art is beautiful and I'm happy to hear he means it to be there for everyone.

"I hope there will be no specific religious or belief interpretation attached to the sculpture. She stands as a representation of love, compassion, thoughts and prayers for everyone."
His words are as beautiful as his work.
