Ex-AT&T Workers Finally Win Religious Discrimination Lawsuit

Author: AP   Source: Jonesboro Sun (AR)

Title: EX-AT&T WORKERS FINALLY WIN LAWSUIT

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Monday announced that a satisfaction of judgment was entered in U.S. District Court in a religious discrimination lawsuit.

The judgment was entered in favor of two male customer service technicians in the Jonesboro Division of the Eastern District of Arkansas. They are Jose Gonzalez and Glenn Owen, who worked as AT and T customer service technicians.

The suit was brought by the federal agency against communications giant AT and T on behalf of the two men, who were suspended and fired for attending a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention.

AT and T paid a total of $1,307,597 pursuant to the judgments entered in the case.

"During the 4-day trial the jury heard evidence that both men had submitted written requests to their manager in January 2005 for one day of leave to attend a religious observance that was scheduled for Friday, July 15, to Sunday, July 17, 2005."

This tells me that the two men did what was necessary to acquire time off to attend this convention.

"Both men had attended the convention every year throughout their employment with AT&T. Gonzalez worked at the company for more than eight years, and Owen was employed there for nearly six years."

This statement tells me that their supervisors knew these gentlemen took time off every year for this convention. Six and eight years respectively says that their supervisors are anti-Jehovah's Witness and denied them time off out of pure spite.

If freedom of religion is to be upheld, it should be for all religious beliefs, not just those espoused by a majority of people.

I've met some cool Jehovah's Witnesses. The bad ones give them a bad reputation (those that pester you during supper) .

Here's my question: Did these two guys not have vacation time they could've used if they thought they'd get a hard time from their store manager? I've had to do similar things to be able to attend events. Especially if I knew way in advance that I wanted to attend those events. If they had no vacation time, then my question is moot.

6 Months Notice? Aug 4th. at 8:28:42 pm EDT

Don't act all surprised with 6 month's notice.
Sounds like an idiot store manager got AT&T in trouble. Should have fired the manager!
