WM3: Torn By 3 Lost Boys And 3 Convicted Youths

Author: Shaila Dewan   Source: New York Times

Title: TORN BY 3 LOST BOYS AND 3 CONVICTED YOUTHS

The patch of woods has been cleared, the shallow ditch has been rerouted, the Blue Beacon Truck Wash has been torn down and 16 years have passed. But though the setting where three 8-year-old boys were found killed, naked and bound, in 1993 is unrecognizable, the crime still has the power to dominate the front page of the small newspaper here and bring tight smiles to the lips of civic boosters.

For years, outsiders have raised questions about the guilt of the three misfit teenagers, Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who were convicted of the murders. But more recently, a steady dribble of new evidence has begun to seep into the consciousness of West Memphis, eroding the once nearly unanimous belief that those outsiders — including rock stars, HBO filmmakers and the creators of “South Park” — did not know what they were talking about.

It's important to be somewhat careful with terms, no? Because I have no problem with WM3 being characterized as a horrific miscarriage of justice wrought by a 'kangaroo court.'

We certainly have them in Washington, and I'd wager they exist in every other state in the nation. The Supreme Court is of course a very dignified looking kangaroo court (and what a sick joke--Scalia? Thomas?) , but a more blatant example from the not too distant past would be Nuremberg. I mean really, if you want to hang your enemies, just do it--don't try and justify your bloodlust with bad lawyering! Ah, but it happens all the time.

But in this specific case, it's rather rude to characterize it as 'hillbilly justice.' I remember the prosecutors and the defense were all well-dressed, groomed, educated and articulate men that were either steering the crazy train, or just not doing enough to stop it.

That could happen in your hometown, or anywhere. And it does happen, far too often for anyone's comfort.

And when will this case of hillbilly justice be overturned by a higher court?

And FYI, "hillbilly justice" is synonymous with "kangaroo court." Do some research before shooting your mouth off trying to defend the statistically single-worst state in the Union.
