Grand Canyon Skywalk Divides Tribe

Author: Sylvia Moreno, Washington Post Source: MSNBC

Title: GRAND CANYON SKYWALK DIVIDES TRIBE
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, the last few feet of a steel and glass skywalk was rolled out over the southwest rim of the Grand Canyon, a 2-million-pound engineering marvel that the Hualapai Indians hope will boost tourism to their remote ancestral land and provide the impoverished tribe with a desperately needed economic boost.
With sage burning and tribal members playing gourds, spiritual leader Emmett Bender blessed the cantilevered horseshoe-shaped skywalk, which will jut out 70 feet from the canyon rim and dangle 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. He called the structure "the white man's idea."
The small Hualapai tribe, whose nearly 1-million-acre reservation includes this rim of the Grand Canyon, is pinning its long-term hopes for economic development on the skywalk.
But environmentalists and others have criticized the skywalk project since its inception, saying that the overhang will tarnish the pristine canyon and that a less intrusive tourist attraction could have been developed.

Heck, if you go back far enough, most of our ancestors have been treated similarly. The Romans ran all over my ancestors, their heirs crushed my ancestral cultures and religions, replacing them with their own. I wish I knew a tenth as much about the culture and beliefs of my ancestors as most Native Americans know about theirs, but the only records come from the victors, and anybody I could ask about it has been dead 1500 years.
The point is that problems like this are cause by self-righteous, greedy HUMANS, not by members of any particular race. Nearly every race has acted this way. Nearly every race has been a victim of this kind of action. It won't stop, either, as long as it is treated as an issue of skin color instead of as an issue of human attitudes.

The Skywalk is their need, and while I would like to see the canyon unsullied- the needs of the tribe should be addressed. After all, they live there. It is their home.

if I could apologize to the Hualapai, I would, even though it's not *personally* my fault their entire nation was treated like third class citizens. It's sad that they're reduced to prostituting their only remaining treasure in order to survive, and even more disgusting that once again some white man is trying to tell them how to live. Isn't it great to see where paternalistic Christian politics get us, given enough time?

And it is by their idea's that our culture and lifestyle was destroyed. Forced onto reservations, some of us, our entire homeland stolen and run over by white men. And yet, they try to keep us in the past, poor and forgotten in the places in which they put us.
How long will it be before they realize that they are the interlopers? That they are the ones who destroy? When I dream of home, I dream of a land uncluttered by buildings and pavement, a place where people roam free and happy in harmony with Mother Earth. I, like most here, am an environmentalist but I too am of Native American heritage and if this will bring money to those who need it, do it.
Will they deny the tribe monetary support? Yes they will, once again if it gives them a reason to keep them down.
My daughter was learning about Native cultures in school. She mentioned to her teacher that she was proud to be Native American. The teacher scowled and came within a step of giving her a detention if she did not be quiet about it. And this is one of the people that teaches my child about my people! 'nuff said.
