Laugh Along With Jesus

Author: Lindsey Hoshaw   Source: Tucson Citizen

Title: LAUGH ALONG WITH JESUS

At the height of his religious devotion, Troy Conrad spent 80 hours a week trying to sell Bibles.

Conrad's belief system was dramatically altered during a routine business pitch toward the end of his three-month salesman stint.

"One day I went to this lady's house and she started telling me that she practices witchcraft, that she's a witch," Conrad says. "As a sheltered Christian boy I was fascinated, so I listened to her instead of trying to sell her books."

The woman gave Conrad "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers, which examines everyday myths held dear by various societies. The book completely changed Conrad's perspective.

I've heard of this fella. Saw a few DVDs of his shows at the local VideoUpdate. I thought he was some kind of Comedic Evangelistic preacher....

Now that I know what he's about, maybe I'll watch them sometime.

Bless you, Conrad! I was raised as an in-direct Catholic for 15 years- was Christened- and went Pagan when I found out I was pregnant with my son. I was 18 at the time. (So, for three years I was "officially" Catholic...) .
There is nothing better than sitting down and having a good laugh when one of the altar candles just won't stay lit, when the cat keeps batting at the bottom hems of my robes, or when "God" sends a 'messenger' to my doorstep right in the middle of a spell...
You have to take things in stride and smile.
There is a church near where I live... and they have 'mottos' posted once in a while on their board. This one has stayed up for almost two months:
"God enjoys fruits of the spirit- not religious nuts"....
I'm thinking that a lot of people like that one (lol!) .
Anyway- it's good to see that there are still people out there who can look at spirituality with good humour and intelligent kindness.
Blessings and Love,
ZenKat

Wow, this guy has run the course! It sounds like he was near a turning point when that "Good Witch" introduced him to the works of Joseph Campbell. Joseph Campbell, in my opinion, had a lot of experience in his life with various belief systems and his findings were remarkable. I'm still reading his stuff over and over as I seem to pick up new stuff each time.

The line in the article that sort of says it all for me is "Religion is the Wal-Martitization of spirituality," Yes. The structure and the control. Look at the conflict that followers generate and engage in. This season of year in particular is a good example.

Well, humor is great and if you can't take a bit of a laugh, there is something you aren't seeing. Good travels to him!
