Halloween: Respect Those Who Avoid The Dark Side

Author: Shaunti Feldhahn   Source: Tucson Citizen

Title: HALLOWEEN: RESPECT THOSE WHO AVOID THE DARK SIDE

ne of the biggest misconceptions about Halloween is that it is "nothing but innocent fun."

Now, children getting excited about trick-or-treating is innocent and a blast, which is why my husband and I allow our children to participate.

But we are also very aware of a dark side to the holiday that is anything but innocent, and are very careful about steering clear of it.

For us that includes no scary costumes and no haunted houses. But many parents prefer to avoid Halloween altogether.

Parents with Judeo-Christian beliefs have struggled with Halloween for centuries.

First of all, this woman works at a Newspaper, and can therefor read. By writing such non-sense, she can induce those who actually favor such non-sense to read, but is too literate herself to believe any of it. If you can read, you find, Jesus never ascribed any overwhelming authority to the evils of the world; rather, he accepted an elevation, above the Polity of the Day, and out-died them. Obviously, Jesus would not be afraid of allowing children to use their imaginations, but recommended we all go dress up as our scariest inquisitors, and go trick or treating door to door.
Why a nice jewish girl would be making fun, of those who deprecate the Occult, I leave to her own imagination.
For Halloween, I think I'll dress in the head of a Jackal, the horns of a Bull, the breasts of a school teacher, and the rod that a certain virgin so enjoyed... Oh, wait, that's my SL Avatar...

... of Shaunti. I've completely stopped reading her crap (I live in Tucson) , and the Citizen for that matter. I wonder if they are still doing the "flip" article, "From the Left." Shaunti is a bigot, a fanatic, and a kook, and the Citizen should stop publishing her hate-filled tripe.

Why Should We? Oct 22nd. at 2:45:45 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

She sounds like someone who quivers in fear, cowering under the covers at every little noise waiting for the spook to appear, little realizing that it's her own overactive imagination that creates the monsters she thinks she sees.
While I have every respect for her choice not to celebrate Halloween, I have zero respect for her ignorance and her reasons behind her refusal. And I have equally little respect for her warning others about "the evils of the day" masking her words in such untruthful "well meaning" diatribe as she has written.
There are always evil people afoot during the entire year and the holiday has little to do with their activities. The funny part is that only a handful are the sickos and wannabees that she accuses too many of being. The rest of us view the holiday as it was always meant to be. As an end of a yearly cycle and the beginning of another--or as a night of fun and frolic, a night to put aside one's own identity in favor of another, just for one night.
That's the real reason for the costumes these days.
It just goes to show that one doesn't have to be a child to be afraid of the dark and what they think is in it. It still doesn't make it so nor does it give any credence to her words.

Folks, just for grins and giggles I typed Shaunti Feldhahn 's name on Goggles search line. This dittzy woman is some sort of "Christian author".
She is not only an authority on "witchcraft" but on male and female relationships. Now, I know what books to get to educate myself on women. NOT!!!!
I wish my wife was still on this side of the veil. None of her comments would be allowed on any message board and she was Presbryterian.

Happy Samhain

Arguing With A Wall Oct 22nd. at 12:02:01 pm EDT

Anyone read the comments at the end of the article? Some seem like they could have been posted by folks from here. Problem is, they're arguing logically and politely with someone who's already convinced we're the lying evil spawn of the prince of darkness. That, and her bread and butter comes from stirring up the ignorant masses and keeping them on the edge of their seats waiting for her next article to come out. Get them all worked up, then they'll buy the paper next week to see what else she has to say about these "practicers of the dark arts". Doesn't matter what you say, she won't be convinced of her mistaken ideas about others. If she did that, she'd be out of a job.

*Evil* Spirits? Oct 22nd. at 11:47:31 am EDT

Laura C. (Weston, Florida) - Email Me

Why does communication with the dead automatically have to be evil to these people?

A lot of these same people have no problem with people standing over Grandma's grave and telling her how proud she'd be to see her grandkids now. Yet the idea of communicating with the dead in any other way gives them the screaming heebie-jeebies.

It Must Be That Time Of Year... Oct 22nd. at 10:22:26 am EDT

MoorDragon (Atlanta, Georgia) - Email Me

...when all the media outlets drag out their "evils of Halloween" stories to stir up the readership.

It's so hilarious to see this supposedly "God Fearing" country get so worked up over Halloween. The church goes into overdrive to condemn it and fire up their crusade against the growing threat of Wicca, paint us with that bright red Satan brush and get their congregations all worked up.

Yet despite that, Halloween remains one of the top holidays in America. Certainly the retailers are not complaining.

Don't the Christians just love to work themselves up about things? To them evil is everywhere and they somehow manage to find it in everything.

I get accosted by some of the fundies because I'm not Christian and I wonder why would I want to be part of a religion that is based on fear? They fear evil, ,they fear sin, the even fear their own god!

To quote Bill the Cat...."Ack!"

Yes, that might be a good idea. just something about the true history of Samhain. Just to help correct the misconceptions. Not like it would do much good in my neighborhood, I'm sure.

The rest of us dress up in costumes and the Christians all run away. Who are the evil spirits again?

Amtehuti (Queens, New York) - Email Me

I agree with the previous poster. If they were able to, they would kill us. They can't, so they settle with indoctrinating their children against us, trying to write laws against us, and using social services to remove our own children and put them in Christian "care". They want to destroy us. I say we fight back! They want to go around and say how evil Halloween is? Maybe we should put our own fliers in every single mailbox, too!

Draken (Bronx, New York) - Email Me - Web

What was that about my "saber-rattling" again? The fluffies who should be too old to be fluffies should face facts: IF THEY COULD GET AWAY WITH IT, THEY WOULD KILL US. My so-called "saber-rattling" is nothing but my declaration to my right to continue my life without threats to it by fundie xians. Instead, they have to commit acts of libel and slander against us (remember the NY Post's piece of libel against us when the pentacle headstone was "approved" by the VA?) .

So Let's Have A Harvest Fest Instead... Oct 21st. at 6:42:05 pm EDT

Rayne Poppy (Fullerton, Nevada) - Email Me

These are the same parents and people who go to their church's annual "Harvest Festivals." On Halloween they will gather at their church in their "non scary" costumes and do all the things that are associated with celebrating Halloween. Why? Because the church doesn't want their people celebrating something so evil and Pagan. So lets call it something non menacing like Harvest Festival and make everyone thing it's some church created thing. Yeah like celebrating the fall harvest isn't Pagan? Give me a break!

Of Course.. Oct 21st. at 6:27:16 pm EDT

bigcat (peoria, Illinois) - Email Me

They have been wrestling with Halloween for years. It was the one holiday they could never truly control-- or subvert to their uses as easily as many of the others.
Frankly, this kind of thing is to be expected. Those things the Church can't control they vilify as evil and that is the real reason this holiday always gets the bad rap it does.
We always get this kind of pitiful horse doopie drivel every year at the same time. Well, no one is forcing them to celebrate and no one needs them in the middle of it all trying to ruin something they hate in ignorance anyway. So they can stay home and avoid it if they want, but they can stop at anytime telling everyone how evil it is--because it really isn't any more evil than any other day. (not that they will.)
As for me, I'll enjoy the evening and revel in the fact that it's Halloween, a delightful positive time that is the beginning of another cycle.

Wow Oct 21st. at 6:15:43 pm EDT

Silver Faery (Hays, Kansas) - Email Me

Well in my life I have had friends who parents did not allow them to celebrate Halloween because of religion. They stayed in the house and watched movies. I and my family always celebrated the holiday and still do. I celebrate Halloween (dressing up and partying) and Samhain (my rituals) !

The funny thing is watching schools and churches go from celebrating Halloween to calling it Harvest Celebration! Kids still dress up, they bob for apples and celebrate the fall...hmmm. Go figure anyone?!

Take three parts "Satanic Panic", stir in misquoted propaganda, add a sprinkling of condescending rhetoric, and Voile, another person who hasn't a clue about what she's talking about.
If "we" were as "evil" and "dark" as she claims to believe, would you believe it to be a good idea to anger us?
