County Signals It Won't Pursue Charge vs. Woman Who Had 'Psychic' Crystals

Author: Alexis Huicochea Source: Arizona Daily Star (AZ)

Title: COUNTY SIGNALS IT WON'T PURSUE CHARGE VS. WOMAN WHO HAD 'PSYCHIC' CRYSTALS
A charge against a woman who was arrested after she was caught with crystals that a psychic gave her to ward off evil is likely to be dropped.
Elvira Zatarain was facing a misdemeanor charge of possession of an imitation controlled substance because a Pima County Sheriff's Department deputy believed that the crystals might have been methamphetamine.
The deputy conducted an on-site test of the crystals at the time and got negative results, but still issued the citation, which carries a maximum fine of $232.

and she won. Kudos Ms. Zatarain.
Assuming nothing else was found in the way of paraphernalia, where does the deputy actually think he/she the citation was warranted? Let alone the the assistant DA or whomever was prosecuting the case decide to offer a plea deal without more evidence? I'm pretty sure, assuming her attorney was actually intelligent, this would have been the quickest trial on the docket that day.
Guess her crystals really worked. :D

. . . is especially bad, because despite a theoretical 'hunch,' the officer conducted the test, and got a NEGATIVE result. He STILL issued the citation, instead of . . . pushing it, for no good at all. The county backed that up--they backed up a NEGATIVE test result. How would you like to explain that in a job interview? 'Yes, I was booked for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. But it wasn't meth, I swear. It's just that the cop and the county authorities really thought it was.' I'm sure your new boss would believe that. I'm telling you, this poor woman had to stand up against some spooky, petty corruption. Ever hear about the 'banality of evil'? This is an outrageous situation, despite being rather low-level. But behavior like that can be applied at the highest levels, if they are comfortable with it. It's an ugly abuse of authority, which they did for no GOOD reason, and contrary to their own evidence! Evil mother***ers. I hate them. I spit upon their false honor.

neither article says anything about quartz. one says "white crystaline substance". sounds like it was sea salt crystals.
a rock of sea salt can in fact look like a meth rock. Might just have been a young cop that didnt know any better.

Sheriff Joe is in Maricopa County. This news article is from Pima county. Nowhere near Phoenix or Sedona, where more enlightened folks could explain things.

The cops in Tuscon can't tell the difference between drugs and quartz crystals?
And then because the department is embarrassed by this obvious fact they try to blame it on a language barrier?
Drug councelling for possession of quartz crystals? It sounds like a bad joke.... but....it really isn't....
I'm glad the woman fought back.
The police in general have too much power, but obviously some of them have very little brain power.

The arresting deputy didn't speak Arabic, either, so it's a good thing the army let him free. If she doesn't respect the local lingo, that carries an additional suspicion that she's faking Ignorance. Still, I've got to wonder how mystic quartz crystals could be confused for an organic substance. Let's get this right, it's U$130, and Drug Counselling, if she pleads guilty to being a suspect? I think there might be a language problem.

What is going on in this country!? A woman can't carry stones without being arrested! That whole department should be taken to task over such behavior.

How could they even consider charging her with anything. Its great they want to crack down on meth but, come on, theres a big difference between meth crystals and white quartz. If anything they should apologize to her for putting her through this fiasco. I congradulate her for standing up for herself and refusing to play their game. Don't get me wrong, I am not against law enforcement, but I am against misuse of power and incompetency. In this case that is clearly whats going on.

She stood up and actually won against petty tyranny. Did any of you read this? They actually tried to force a 'plea deal' with a lesser fine, and drug counseling, for a cop's ignorance regarding crystal identification. She would have stomped them senseless had it gone to trial, but ONLY under threat of a trial and the bad exposure did they drop charges. Shame on them. Shame on them! And they are still trying to blame it on a 'language' problem! Sounds to me like it's THEIR brain and ethics problem. So I guess their test results are fast and loose, or what? Boy, just the idea of those behaviors makes me livid. Very bad karma on them. I will lightly praise them for being aggressive against meth, though. But misapplied force is a terrible, terrible thing. The negative test result should have stopped it cold--but it didn't. They decided to push it. You have to be so on guard when dealing with law enforcement, or they can trample right over you and fill their coffers with petty injustice monies. I never mind paying for a speeding ticket, but if a cop ever lied about the actual speed I knew I was driving, they would create an enemy for life. This lady won, and that's great. But if I was her, I would pack up and move now. Others have been properly warned, but obvioulsy the evil of petty corruption lives there, and it's probably not moving away as quickly as you freely can, to gain some peace of mind.
