Marin Farmers Market Asks Witch To Leave

Author: Rob Rogers, Bay Area News Group Source: Mercury News

Title: MARIN FARMERS MARKET ASKS WITCH TO LEAVE
After spending the past six summers giving free tarot readings beneath the redwood trees of Bolinas Park, the Rev. Joey Talley, the "Good Witch of West Marin," has come to think of herself as a part of the Fairfax Farmers Market.
Managers at the Marin Farmers Market see things differently. The organization, which operates eight farmers markets throughout the Bay Area, says Talley has never applied to work as a vendor or entertainer at the Wednesday night market, and they've asked her to leave.
"We don't want the market to become a free-for-all festival," said market manager Amelia Spilger. "I've had to turn down (applications from) masseuses, chiropractors and holistic healers. They all have a place in the community, but we have limited space in the market."

She said it was per session, not per reading. She's also a clinical psychologist with specialized training with war veterans and rehab patients. She's blending counseling with the Craft: herbalism, tarot, spell working and charms, to offer what help she can to clients. $100 bucks for a 50 minute session is quite reasonable, both in counseling in the Craft. Folks need to get over their hangups about charging for services in the Craft. If we can't support ourselves, we won't be able to continue to offer service to the community we live in.
She's likely been going to the market for advertising. If she does it free, it's a great way to help those who otherwise can't afford it, and also to network and attract paying clients. But yes, she didn't ever apply, and it sounds like they've been quite gracious for several years about it. She does still need to play by the rules in order to be there.

of certain people who make us look bad. Shame on her for her unscrupulous behavior. She ought to feel ashamed for her selfishness. Ah, well, the wheel turns and she'll get her just rewards later on. As for readings, I'd NEVER charge 100 bucks for slapping down a few cards. That there shows the mark of greed and maybe a lack of confidence in her ability to give good readings. i don't know any ethical psychic who'd charge exorbitant prices for readings, regardless of 'making a living'. And kudos to Thorin for starting the ball rolling--i agree 100 % with you.

I agree, that "Rev." Talley should just go through the same application process as everyone else. She's admitted to sneaking back in to the park, to give tarot readings at the Farmers' Market -- after being specifically told to leave.
Hey, Rev. Talley... How about just lowering your prices and letting those teenagers get a free reading at your normal place of business -- your house? For $100, you better have an iron-clad money-back guarantee on your work, where if what you predict and/or "see" doesn't come true the customer gets a FULL refund!
Anyway, what does Tarot reading have to do with a FARMERS' Market? That's like selling bicycles at an Art Gallery.....

Aside from her blatant unethicalness in sneaking herself in this without following the rules like the actual members did, the thing is a FARMER'S market, folks. IOW farmers big and small see their produce. Unless she actually grows her Tarot cards, she doesn't qualify to be IN this market.
She would be better off doing her Tarot readings as a vendor in various public events like fairs and such.
It looks way too sneaky and underhanded and quite frankly in bad judgment for her to do what she did. We in the Pagan/ occult community have had more than enough of that sneaky type behavior pulled on us before ( Kirk Cameron's little act on the Druids, for example) to know how unacceptable it should be to use that same deception ourselves.
She should have done the legitimate channels and she should be ashamed of herself.

First off, when I read the headline here on Witchvox, I was upset, and felt she should have the right to do Tarot readings there......BUT.......after learning that she has NEVER applied, and admits to sneaking behind their backs.....nope, sorry, she has no right being there. That would be like saying it was ok down at the Grand Rapids PPD back 2 years ago when a group of nutter-Christians showed up, and set up a booth w/o permission, and started threatening Pagans. Guess what?? The cops showed up, and arrested some of them. Sorry, but her reasons for being there seem a bit skewed also......for teens to be able to get a free reading behind their parent's back.....and to not have to pay her OUTRAGOUS fee of $100 a reading......come on......get real!! When I do readings, I think the most I have charged was around $20!!!!! Sorry, but she needs to apply, just like others......and if they don't allow that sort of thing......oh well.......go find a festival that does! GEEESH!! Sorry.....[RANT OFF]
