Christmas Displays Plus: Council Adds, Doesn’t Subtract

Author: Rebecca Boyle   Source: Fort Collins Now (CO)

Title: CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS PLUS: COUNCIL ADDS, DOESN’T SUBTRACT

Who would have thought tannenbaums and colored lights would spark a debate as acrimonious as a four-letter word used against the president?

For the second time in as many months, Fort Collins found itself in the national spotlight as the subject of ridicule, largely from political conservatives, because of something that started as a small issue.

In the end, the Christmas tree controversy, like so many others, died not with a bang, but a whimper.

By a 6-1 vote before a packed City Hall Tuesday, Fort Collins City Council rejected swaths of a proposal by a community task force that had recommended a focus on white light and secular winter symbols as a means of celebrating the holidays. But the council also embraced part of the proposal, which called for a city-sponsored all-faith display at the museum. That display will likely include a menorah, a symbol of the Jewish faith that sparked the debate two years ago.

For Fundies to whine oppression when the state doesn't advertise Christianity and only Christianity...

Why, you can't let the Jews have a display, or else Bahai and Wiccans might have one... Can't have that...

So Now I Have My Say ! Nov 26th. at 10:11:19 pm EST

A Mall, Shopping Center or what have you is not public property. It belongs to the investors and corporations who own it and not to the customers and other hanger-outs who go there. The owners have the right to decide what is allowable on there property based on what will attract the most customers or for what ever reason for that matter. In a free society this is just and right.

In a not so free society, Mob rule is the order of the day. So what I would say to the fundies is this. Don't even attempt to set the adgenda for our space. If you don't accept our policy of inclusion, set up a company, sell stock and raise capital, open a fundie mall, set the adgenda and run it by your own rules.

That's the way things are done in a free society. You do believe in a free society, don't you ?

I don't have a problem living in a free society. Apparently, they do.

You all have seen my other post about Family Research Council, but they always do this thing every year called freind or foe. It is meant to put out to the Christian Right who in the department store world will say "Merry Christmas" when you walk throught the door.

Now ol' Tony Perkins has a poll going on his radio site to put to the question to his listening public should homosexual rights be legislated.

Since I have been putting this site and poll out we are almost at 50-50.

We have until the end of the week until the poll closes (or we starting winning) . So vote and pass it on.

This Kind Of Thing Gives Me A Headache... Nov 26th. at 5:10:52 pm EST

...they had a good idea at least, keep the decorations as secular and put religious symbols together on a separate display.

The problem is when people comes out and say that it's 'political correctness gone mad.'

Decorations can be stunningly beautiful, gaudy and over the top or absolutely hideous.

For me I don't object to seeing a Nativity scene so long as it's taseful and not falling to bits.

Probably because there are other myths that tie in with the Nativity.

Yule is about the birth of the God, the birth of Jesus is a paralell.

Culture wars as people attempt to validate their claim to supremacy and/or invalidate everyone else. A madhouse at the store and on the roads as people flock to the materialist message. Seemingly endless I-want lists.

Oh, yeah-- *this* is why I hate Christmas so much that I don't even really like Yule.

I'm with the Rabbi-- From the bottom of my tradition to the bottom of yours, have a happy, merry, and blessed whatever-it-is-you-celebrate.

And let everyone else do the same.

So much for peace on Earth and goodwill toward folks.

I think this could work. Keep the public property displays secular. But I think having an all-inclusive exhibit at a museum is a great idea. After all, a museum is for learning.
