Christmas Warriors And Hot Air

Author: Natalie Costanza-Chavez   Source: Denver Post

Title: CHRISTMAS WARRIORS AND HOT AIR

Oh, boy, I did not want to address this topic, but it could be coming to your town. Bill O'Reilly started making fun of Fort Collins — the town where I live — on national TV.

There has been a Christmas decoration snafu unfolding. It's embarrassing.

This new embarrassment is simply silly. It seems the City Council, some years back, ran into a ruckus about Christmas ornaments.

A rabbi asked that a menorah be added to the Christmas display in the town square, and oddly, instead of simply saying "Yes," lots of head scratching ensued. In the spirit of full disclosure, I went on record then as being fully in favor of a gloriously lit menorah in the public square. It seemed an utter no-brainer.

A Chicken Little "what if the sky falls" mentality took hold. Stuff like "What if the Wiccans (who were clearly being confused with Halloween witches, complete with warts, odd green bubbling brews and the like) asked to put up some sort of broom display? What if someone wants to specifically represent otters, or terrorists, or Lutherans? What if?"

This Is Really Getting Ancient Nov 29th. at 10:36:26 pm EST

It's way past being merely "old".

There is only way to prevent the "wrong" religious Holiday Displays being shown on the proverbial (and literal) Court-house lawn... Don't allow ANY of them to be displayed, ever. It's either all of them, together -- or none at all.

Oh, and the Christian Bible -- and I'm definitely NOT a Christian, so don't even try to say that I am -- actually is Historical...mostly. There was, and is, a town named "Jericho"; most of the so-called "fictional" places have been verified as REAL by Archaeology (if none of the Bible is real, then it follows that none of the places in the Bible can be real...) ; and all of the Key Figures of the Bible have long been known to have existed. And this is just a bare fraction of what has been verified through SCIENTIFIC MEANS.

As I said, I'm NOT a Christian -- I'm simply willing to accept the Facts for what they are: FACTS. I don't just turn away and say "Oh, I don't agree with their ideas, so whatever they say just has to be completely false..." Please, don't give the idiots what they want -- which is for you to disregard things just because you don't happen to agree with them.

Chicken Little actually was right about the sky falling... For him, it was coming down fast, even he was the only to see it.

He is absolutely right when he says that culture wars have taken precedence over fighting poverty, discrimination and ill health.

It's a shame that's what a lot of fundies rely on so they will simply just scoff at this article and call him 'an evil liberal out to get Christianity.' and continue their war on alternative Christmas ornaments, homosexuals, bi sexuals and anyone who doesn't subscribe to their beliefs.

Yes, this time of year- (in fact any time of year) a major holiday approaches you see these hoary old ridiculous arguments rear their ugly heads for yet another go around.
Now if we could harness the energy from all that hot air-we could solve the energy crisis.
As for that broom display, Now there's an idea! A christmas tree made from brooms and decorated with a Sun ornament! Happy whatever you want to call it.

Working in a store, I'm told to wish my customers merry christmas. But I know that not all of them do the christmas thing, so I broaden and characteristically humorize it into something like, "Happy Merry-christmas-holiday-celebration-season." People seem to like it. And, living in an army area it covers many bases. I'm a bit of a comical smart-ellic. Go figure.

Just do what I do: Call Dec. 25th the same thing the MMORPG Kingdom of Loathing calls it: "Crimbo."

And I haven't seen any actual credible historical documents pertaining to the existence of some guy named Jebus. The closest thing I've seen, the "shroud of Turin," was proven to be a forgery.

Personally I Prefer A Tree With Lights Nov 28th. at 6:50:05 pm EST

Shadowbear (Hillsboro, Oregon) - Email Me

To a broom display for Yule (or the winter solstice) , I have a big lighted star in my window and icicle lights along the porch and have a great time. No nativity scene although someone gave me a Lladro child in the manger which can stand in for the sun god if I feel like it.

To me, religion is the stupidist thing to fight over because none of it is true in the sense of provable historical facts or scientific truth. We cannot understand our creator - if we cannot do it, we probably cannot understand a being that could. We tell ourselves stories to try to understand what is totally beyond us and create our own belief system. That is great - our attempts to connect with our creator do allow us to come close to comprehending and allow us to grow in our wisdom as our science allows us to grow in our knowledge of how it was put together. Science is actually proving that the religious belief that says we are all one is correct - at our smallest particle level, all people, rocks, plants and animals are the same - and magic works.

...if the lights aren't red and green. He hates white lights.

*Rolls eyes*

The "broom display" comment was just funny.

And correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Jesus Jewish? A Menorah seems like a more appropriate decoration in that regard as opposed to the Heathen tree.

Making Me Laugh Nov 28th. at 12:09:41 pm EST

Really - we are getting to holidays defined and declared by committees run by Drama Queens for sure. It used to be so easy. Kids would get all excited, dress up, have plays, make decorations, bake cookies, etc for whatever holiday. Now look at what we have all around. A PC mess for sure. We need to stop the PC bickering and bullying. Really. It's just wrecking things. The author of this article did a pretty good job expressing her frustration. I don't think this could get too much worse unless the legislatures or (save us) even congress tried to sort it. A 'special' committee would be established and they could go for years...

"The only Grinches are the ones who would rather see towns battle over red and green lights, or immigrant people, or two people who love each other wanting to marry, than spend their time and money on real fights, like the ones against poverty, discrimination, or the ill health of even a single one of us."

I can get behind that sentiment. One hundred percent.

The 'culture wars' are real, and they are made by all the people, on all the sides, who are determined to WIN them for their own specific point of view.

The 'culture wars' are real, and they are quite probably the biggest bloody waste of time and energy I have seen in this incarnation.

Merry Christmas...

...Happy Hannukah...

...Blessed Solstice...

...Have A Nice Kwanzaa, and I apologize for being unfamiliar with the correct form for the wishes...

...I don't even know if Ramadan falls around this time this year, but I hope it's a good one anyway...

...if I missed your holiday, I'm sorry, and I sure hope you enjoy it...

...and I add my sincere wishes that the 365-and-one-quarter days following the day commonly referred to as "New Year's Day" will be happier, more constructive, and generally better than the 365-and-one-quarter that preceded them, and that said improvement will be a continuing trend.

There. It won't fit conveniently on a banner. I'd hate to hear someone try to sing it. But THERE.

I love you. Be blessed.

Recorded History Nov 28th. at 10:40:56 am EST

"The facts being that there is not where in recorded history a real person that fits the bill for Jesus."

Nor is there anything in "recorded history " to substantiate the existance of any other God or Goddess. And actually I have seen someplace
maybe an arrest order for a Jesus from the time in question. Maybe it was in the writings of Josephus.
I just dont remember.

All Right Article Nov 28th. at 10:22:17 am EST

Orion 6Xray (Park City, Kentucky) - Email Me - Web

Until the person tried to equate Jesus with a historical figure. The facts being that there is not where in recorded history a real person that fits the bill for Jesus. The problem is that people assume that the Torah, Bible, and Quran are factual historical texts, and what adds to the problem is that we have religious and secular colleges teaching these books as historical texts with out the rigor of the scientific method.

Finding God/ddess is a spiritual bond, not a way to mold people into servants and followers.

My craft molds and shapes my reality, but I don't expect anyone else to follow my craft and kneel before my alter, because it isn't their path. For anything to change we that are tolerant must stand up to any faith that has the creed that states "Our way is the only way, and you must convert ore die". The Abrahamic Faiths have that as an underlying theme, and just because it is taboo to murder heretics, infidels, and pagans in America today doesn't mean the rhetoric and attitude isn't there. All it will take is a charismatic leader to become president and for the country to fall on hard times for the dark ages to return.

And to see how close we are to that check out the failing dollar and a presidential candidate called Mike Huckabe.

Darker days await just around the corner, and the choice is up to you if it happens. And for you democrats don't think Hilary will change a damn thing, or Obama, because they are buttering up the evangelicals as we speak.
