Unwicked Wicca

Author: Marvin Read   Source: The Pueblo Chieftain (CO)

Title: UNWICKED WICCA

Some people just don’t act according to stereotype.

Take Lyn Brown, for example: She is, by her own careful and considered evaluation, a witch.

But there’s no pointy hat, no skulking black cat, no bubbling cauldrons and, though she may own a vacuum cleaner, there are no brooms upon which to fly. And spells? The ones she casts are positive.

Nope, it’s just plain ol’ Lyn Brown, telephone receptionist at Colorado State University-Pueblo, once-upon-a-time Presbyterian, a native Puebloan, a woman who believes that any and all church buildings and any and all faiths are sacred and good, even as she asserts her right to disagree with some of them.

I'll Start With The Positive Apr 1st. at 11:47:38 pm EDT

Mordechai (Edmond, Oklahoma) - Email Me

I also agree that it was a good article..... for Wiccans. The problem I have with this article is the same I have with any article about Pagans when Satan is brought up and that is the fact all these people being interviewed don't know anything about Satan, Satanism, or anything remotely Left Hand Pagan which they ignorantly and happily throw under the bus. What the need to emphasize is the fact that Paganism has nothing to do with christian mythos satan with the exception that ONCE IN A WHILE they used a Pagan God in mythos satans image.Alot of images of mythos Satan resemble jews more than Pagan Gods. But outside of making the true statement that Paganism has nothing to do with the christian mythos satan it needs to end there. To say it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH Satan is a false statement. Those of you denouncing this statement are proving my point. A) You haven't actually studied true Paganism just the Wicca stuff ( if you look at a majority of modern witch craft paths they have a basis in Wicca) B) like some fundies refuse to understand any Paganism you refuse to atleast understand your Left Hand brothers and sisters. We respect your path but you don't respect ours. We are all brothers and sisters regardless of path but I for one am tired of speechs on topics outside the Right Hand being given by the Right Hand because you're in effect perpetuating misinformation on the Left Hand Path.

We cannot yet truely unite with so many brothers and sisters unaware of the true depth and scope of what paths fully make up the Pagan community.

I was impressed by the article and the person it featured. Keep up the good work to all concerned.

A Positive Light... Apr 1st. at 1:39:01 pm EDT

Lamplight Circle - New Orleans (New Orleans, Louisiana) - Email Me

I'm really glad I read this article... typically, I skip over the news reels on witchvox.

When I read about her letting the interviewer know that Wiccans don't worship Satan and that the imagery of cloven hooves is bastardized from Pan, it reminded me of almost every conversation I've had with non-Wiccans. The question of Satanism always comes up, so rebuking that idea is one of the first things out of my mouth now, before the question is asked. I pray for a day when no one asks that question again, and everyone has the knowledge that Wiccans are a people who strive for goodness in the world, and no "evil" deities could be a part of that.

I also felt the article was well-written (former journalism major appreciating the symmetry) .

Learning about people like her gives me hope and makes me examine myself so that I can improve my attitudes. I hope we all do the same.

Blessed Be!

This Is The Truth... Apr 1st. at 9:20:47 am EDT

Lea (Cedar Park, Texas) - Email Me

of the lives we live and should lead. My husband hates it when I give change to pan handlers. Yes, some of them probably don't need it but if I see a woman and her child on the street and looking as if they do, I give. Maybe I am naive, maybe not. I have always stopped and given aid to hurt animals, have even stopped traffic to pick up a turtle and carry it in its chosen direction off a roadway so it would not get crushed.

It is a simple respect for life, all life, that we should desire to care for and assist.

Many times I have found myself crying simply due to the pain of others, especially those I do not know and once again my husband who was raised baptist, thinks I am ridiculous since there is nothing I can do. But there is something we can do, we can set precedent and help where and when it is needed, we can show that the evil they think we are is unfounded and ridiculous. Because that is the true definition of ridiulous, people believing something that is simply unfounded because it is what they were told or read somewhere.

Cafeteria? I Don't Think So! Mar 31st. at 12:31:17 pm EDT

WitchPoet (Claremont, California) - Email Me - Web

Far from the cafeteria this lady has set herself down in the very kitchen of Deity for a hearty meal from the hands of the God and Goddess; eschewing the artificial dogmas and fantasies the four-star Doctrine-Over-Deity crowd she gets it more than 90% of the "trained and accepted" fools I have known.

Anyone out there who has "trained" to third degree might want to go look up this lady to get remidial lessons in humility and what love is really about.

These Examples Are Good To Follow Mar 31st. at 12:06:56 pm EDT

Silverwing (Colorado Springs, Colorado) - Email Me

She was right. How many of us wouldn't hesitate to help a critter in need? What's a few extra moments and, if you can do it, a little help for others? Loved the article. Practice payin it forward every day. Have for years and the folks I help love it. We need more doing that in the world.

A Very Good Article.. Mar 31st. at 11:28:29 am EDT

It's very nice to see such articles. She at least, followed her heart and set an example.

On Wicca Mar 31st. at 10:35:00 am EDT

Fraoch (Shelby, North Carolina) - Email Me

That was one of the best articles on Wicca I've read outside of a Wiccan publication. It is my sincerest hope that it will turn some heads. I wonder how someone couldn't read that article and not say, good people, but some folks keep their eyes closed up until they've fallen over the edge.

I'm pleased to see that she boldly admits to ecclectacism and calls it "caffateria Wicca." I think it suggests a free spirit and adventurous soul who can weather the apsersions cast by some people who believe you've got to follow a certain mold to be held in any honor. I can't say that's not so, not being Wiccan, but as a scholar of religion I've seen that attitude deharmonize and destroy rather than balance and construct anything useful.

What a nice article. It's the most friendly and open in a while.

Great Article. Mar 30th. at 10:09:37 am EDT

AutumnWind (Bushnell, Florida) - Email Me

I agree with the other comments. If more news media would print the truth instead of negative sensationalism Wicca would finally be protrayed in it's true light. Meaning, our believe system is as good or flawed (with the exception that Wiccans don't blame our troubles or bad habits on an unseen evil force) as any other believe system (not that I'm am making any comparison to Wicca to any Christian/Mosulim (m.s) /fill in the blank faith only that Wicca has tenets that can be, if taken out of context, be used in a negative way) . Please pay close attention that I stated that Wicca has tenets that can be used in a negative way. I am not saying that Wicca is a flawed believe system but the fact that I have to make sure that everything that I state is not taking out of context in fact proves my point. Meaning, some people would rather look for the negative meaning of anything rather than looking for the positive aspects. Not that I am stating that Wicca attracts that type of personality rather that all faith based system has to deal with this type of personality. Please understand that I'm not trying to bash Wicca or any or believe system but only trying to make negative correlations that all faiths have to deal with.

A Great Article, And A Great Example Mar 29th. at 9:02:47 pm EDT

Aidan Odinson (Collingdale, Pennsylvania) - Email Me - Web

I loved this part:

'A little voice said to me, 'Shame on you. If that was an animal, you would have stopped without a thought.' So I stopped at King Soopers and bought a bag of rolls, some lunch meat, cheese, a gallon of milk and some doughnuts."'

She not only sets the example, but she also shows that she got a basic point.

Each of us might not be able to help all of them, regardless of what the situation is. But if each one helped one in one particular situation, we'd be well on the way to solving the situation.

Lady Demos (Muscle Shoals, Pennsylvania) - Email Me

I thought this was a wonderful article except for what she says here:

"A little voice said to me, 'Shame on you. If that was an animal, you would have stopped without a thought.' So I stopped at King Soopers and bought a bag of rolls, some lunch meat, cheese, a gallon of milk and some doughnuts."

This part just made me sad.

Live Well

The Best Article I've Read So Far Mar 29th. at 10:01:28 am EDT

Liz (Lawrenceville, Georgia) - Email Me

This article made me cry a little bit. I had been depressed about petty problems, but I then realized that I could be in the car stranded by the road, and how fortunate I am. Praise the Goddess for this article and the witch it profiles.
