Ruined Rite With Bald Eagle Upsets Native Americans

Author: Electa Draper, The Denver Post   Source: Vail Daily

Title: RUINED RITE WITH BALD EAGLE UPSETS NATIVE AMERICANS

Darrell Pino said Monday he experienced "indescribable" heartache when a Native American ceremony to lay to rest a dead bald eagle was violated by the raptor's later removal from a Boulder County park.

Pino, joined by several leaders of the Native American community, held a news conference Monday afternoon on the "disheartening" implications of the thwarted spiritual ritual involving the eagle.

Hm... Jul 15th. at 4:25:08 pm EDT

After being around a few different Native American Tribes..I can see the confussion. Though from what I can gather, it was obviously a buriel, and done with respect. No one involved was doing anything illegal. I know that most look at me funny for not picking up somethings I have noticed that could stand out, but you never know anymore just what or whom was involved in it.

It's called respect, I know the hiker did the right thing, but the rangers/law inforcement should have known what it was once they got the discription and should have contacted the tribe nearby.

Another ignorant person in essence desecrating a native American ritual site.

Ever hear about the " new agers" who mess up the desert sacred land space of the Navahos ( I think its them) by making stone medicine wheels and crap like that, totally ignorant of exactly HOW the natives show respect for that land? Same desecration through ignorance and stupidity factor.

While the hiker may have had good intentions and the concern over the deaths of bald eagles may have contributed to the unintended desecration, seems to me the signs that were there at the burial site could have clued the hiker into figuring out this was a native American thing.

Eagles for awhile were dying in alarming numbers and the mercury level in their food was thought to be one possible cause.

Still, the ignorance of the hiker is a symptom of the general ignorance about native Americans and their beliefs by most other Americans.

Good Faith Jul 15th. at 1:06:55 pm EDT

From the article it seems that The US government acted in good faith by releasing an Eagle carcass to the Dine for burial, that it was respectfully treated and that the Hiker in ignorance and Good faith turned it in. Some thought on how to keep this from happening again would be in order . The original article has a lot of redneck reader comments added to it. The Navajo deserve better than this.

begining of quote:The eagle came from the National Eagle Repository near Denver, a collection point for federally protected animals found dead. endof quote from article.

What this means is that some native americans are given special dispensation by the government to bury those animals that are sacred. This eagle was a DEAD eagle that the national eagle repository had. They took it to be correctly buried in the traditional way.

Not Creepy For Goodness Sake Jul 14th. at 10:55:19 pm EDT

they were just giving a repectful burial in native american fashion to a very sacred bird who was already dead. Unfortunately the way the government has written the law, anyone touching an eagle even for burial has to have the paper work for it and be a card carrying member of the native american tribe.
So, they asked to be able to bury a dead eagle, in the traditional way. An eagle is an elder of the tribe.
I guess knee jerk reactions are not just given by the christians.

Not Much Of An Article. Jul 14th. at 9:32:20 pm EDT

Where's the detail? Why were they burying it? Why was it dug up? And who dug it up?

Any religion that requires a dead animal makes me wary anyway. The vagueness here isn't helping.
