Wiccans Not Wicked, Practitioner Tells Group

Author: Patricia Daddona   Source: The Day (CT)

Title: WICCANS NOT WICKED, PRACTITIONER TELLS GROUP

The pentacle and crescent tattooed on his forehead and another pentacle hanging from a chain around his neck were the only outward signs that the minister speaking to a small crowd at the local library Sunday was a witch.

Dressed in black leather jacket, sweater, pants and boots, the Rev. Rapid Cabot Freeman spoke to a group of about 20 people of all faiths and views — Jewish, Catholic, agnostic and Wiccan —about the misconceptions that come with the public's understanding of his religious beliefs.

Children passed a pirate's hat collecting money to replace the library's outdated computers as people drifted into the cramped space and claimed folding chairs before the talk began. Amber Hopper of Fairfield, also a witch, blew smoke from a burning stick of sage nestled in an abalone shell into the autumn air at the library's entrance to invite people in.

I think the idea of having a pentacle tattooed on your forehead is somewhat akin to wearing a target, but it's his skin and he's entitled to do whatever he wants to it. Enough of that.
I appreciate his efforts to dispell some of the myths and misconceptions perceived of our faith, and I think it's not a bad idea. And frankly, I think, why not a better time than Samhain? This is the time when witches and all that is connected, incorrectly or correctly to us is in prominence. Pagan communities should take this opportunity to clarify to the public what we are and what we are not.
We also as pagans need to grow a thicker skin and not scream 'persecution!' when they think they're being singled out (take the recent hanging witch mess) or those unstable individuals trying to use paganism as an excuse for their shameful behavior (like the lady burning tires and trash while drunk as a skunk) . If we want to be taken seriously by the public, we need to start putting down those stereotypes attributed to us and give the public a blunt, accurate description of what we are. As for pagan history, we need to inject some major accuracy into that as well. Like my main pet peeve---Wicca is NOT an ancient, pre-Christian religion that existed for 10,000 years. Is that so hard?
