The Story Of The Witch Of Monroe

Author: Tony Spinelli Source: Connecticut Post

Title: THE STORY OF THE WITCH OF MONROE
Ed Coffey, the town historian of Monroe, has researched a lot of local legends and lore over the years, but one of his most intriguing subjects is Hannah Cranna, the so-called witch of Monroe.
"I was probably in my late teens when I first heard of Hannah Cranna," said Coffey, now 68. He joined the local historical society as soon as it was formed, and benefited from guidance by mentor Merrill Beach, the town historian of neighboring Trumbull, who was his wife's godfather.
"Merrill had heard of her, but didn't know about her, and I started doing research on her in the records. I started looking up stories about her."
Coffey at first thought the stories about Hannah Cranna were fictional, but he became certain that she had been a real person. He figured she was a shrewd person, a "smart cookie."

Zianna Elanesse (Lusby, Maryland) - Email Me

Sounds like a lot of old widows from that time period...dressed all in black, begging for food and scraps and cursing people if they didn't give her what she wanted. They assumed that she didn't have children because her children would have taken care of her in her old age, but children often moved away or died before mom did, and not always care to take care of their elders. Blessed Be, Zianna
