Sorcery And Absolution

Author: The Hartford Courant   Source: The Hartford Courant (CT)

Title: SORCERY AND ABSOLUTION

Thanks to the perseverance of a mother and daughter, state lawmakers are poised to come to terms with a troubled chapter in the state's history.

Debra Avery and her daughter, Addie, are descendants of Mary Sanford of Hartford, one of nearly a dozen Connecticut residents (most of them women) convicted of witchcraft and executed in the mid-1600s.

By contemporary standards, their "crimes" might be considered an independent streak or a mental illness. Ms. Sanford was reported to have been dancing outside late one night and consuming alcohol. By that standard, who among us is not a witch?

Absolution... Mar 27th. at 11:00:24 am EDT

Considering the slavish lives most women led back then it's not too unlikely that getting drunk and dancing in the street was that one's way to put some excitement and change into what obviously was a daily grind of chores and childbearing and rigid rounds of prayer that she endured year after year.
As for the others, gossip was the actual killer-and a charge of witchcraft was just the topper for whatever reasons they were accused.
I believe they should be absolved, because they weren't really witches, they were stubborn, they were foolish, they were innocent or independent in mind-and some were just plain tired of doing the same thing day in and day out with no end in sight.
It's time to lay this to rest.

It Is Good To Set The Record Straight... Mar 27th. at 8:10:08 am EDT

...even if only as a matter of superficial emotional restitution.

Who knows?? Perhaps a record of denunciation of this behavior will serve, someday, to set a precedent that prevents it from happening again.

A better preventative might be to seek to understand, and to teach that understanding, that we might be better inoculated against such virulent hysteria in the future.
