Title: THE DEVIL'S MARK — COUNTY WAS SITE OF LAST WITCH TRIALS
In spring of 1692, Fairfield County was at the epicenter of the very last witch trial in North America.
A 17-year-old Stamford maid named Katherine Branch began having fits. Asked why, she said another Stamford woman, Elizabeth Clawson, had bewitched her. Branch's accusations started a chain of events that got Clawson imprisoned, physically examined for the "devil's mark", tried and thrown into a pond,
On Monday, March 24, legislators in the State Senate's Judiciary Committee timed out on a joint resolution that would have denounced the trials of Clawson and all other accused Connecticut witches.
