Title: MOHEGANS' ANCIENT BURIAL GROUND RECLAIMED AND BLESSED
The Mohegan Tribe has honored its ancestors with a ceremony blessing the restoration of the sacred Royal Mohegan Burial Ground.
Dozens of people gathered Aug. 15 on a three-acre parcel of land at Sachem and Washington streets in the city for the event, which opened with a prayer and smudging by Tribal Chairman Bruce ''Two Dogs'' Bozsum.
''The importance of this day means much more than words that I can say. We're all here today to honor all of those who are here under us. To be together to witness something that happened [to those ancestors] is to right a great wrong that happened to the Mohegan people and I'm very happy to have all of you here today to celebrate this day with us. It means so much to all of our ancestors.''

On one hand, I feel truly terrible guilt for what was done to the indiginous peoples of the continents currently known as North and South America by European invaders.
No amount of logic, rationalization, or understanding makes genocide right.
On the other hand, it seems that conquest and genocide has been the way of Homo sapiens ever since we became numerous enough that "running away" and "letting them go" ceased to be a truly viable option.
In all honesty, even though many species will nurse elderly, injured, or weak members, in most species the stronger members also dominate-- and often enough cull out-- the weaker members. When other animals do this, we call it "natural."
I think that hate and genocide, based in fear and greed, must be "natural" behaviors for Homo sapiens.
Does that make them right?? Not on any moral scale I'm familiar with. Not in my own heart. And not in my own mind.
I'm glad they've won at least some of their fight. I'm glad they're happy, glad they feel that they have in some way honored their ancestors and their ancestral tradition.
I'm sorry that their land was desecrated in the first place.
At the same time, I remember that, actually, all ground is sacred ground...
...and, in my bleaker moments, I wonder what the h*ll it's all for anyway.
